I found this piece neglected in a dark dingy basement with the rest of the reject items.

FFFF (2).webp

I paid my $2.25 (half off) and made my way home.

It is a corning ware 8 cup coffee pot. It was a pattern I never saw before so it piqued my interest. Turns out it is from 1959 and it either predates cornflower blue or was put out at the same time. Very rare though, or so the internets tell me.

I could only find two previous ones being sold on ebay (via worthpoint) one in 2005 and one in 2007.

It goes by black starburst or platinum. I think I might just add it to my collection to show off to the relatives. They collect the pyrex/corningingware. It should produce some envy. :icon_thumleft:

Have to keep beatin' the street, nobody gets everything. Happy hunting!

The great part about what we all do is that nobody knows it all. It's amazing how many amazing buys I've made at auctions when there are 200 other dealers in the audience. Which is why I always try to recommend to people who enjoy this is if there is something you REALLY enjoy, try becoming an expert in that particular field. That way, when the exceptionally rare item comes up and everybody else is clueless about it since there is no previous sales history, you have a pretty good idea what it might be worth.

For example... There is a milk glass lobster covered dish out there. Exceptionally rare. You won't find any sales history of it online as far as I know. I've only ever known of one being sold, and that was 3-4 years ago on ebay and depressingly enough, it was a full time ebay seller about 30min from where I used to live.

The rare stuff is out there. :)

I recently picked up a very similar one in the blue cornflower pattern. I put it for auction on Ebay and it was rejected as a recalled item, seems the handles were faulty and would fall off when serving the hot coffee. Maybe it was just mine though, something to check out anyway. Mine still makes a nice display piece. Here's a copy and paste of what Ebay sent me...

Dear j.raud (raudenbush@charter.net),

You recently listed the following listing:

260957297419 - CORNING WARE VINTAGE P- 146 6 CUP COFFEE POT PERCULATOR BLUE CORNFLOWER

Unfortunately, we had to remove your listing because of the following:

Your Corning Ware Vintage P- 146 6 Cup Coffee Pot Perculator Blue Cornflower was recalled by the Consumer Products Safety Commission because the metal band/handle detaches easily. eBay strongly supports the efforts of the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) to protect consumers against potentially hazardous goods.

Yes, the all metal tops were recalled because they were glued on. The original design (like mine) has a metal collar that is screwed together, no glue. The reason they changed the design in the first place was because the glass lids were being chipped and broken and people complained. So they they changed the lids to metal but glued the lids on. After thousands and thousands of uses the glue failed. So a scalding hot coffee pot would slip loose from the handle and turn into a water grenade.

There was no recall on the old designs so they are allowed to be sold on ebay. Usually they command a premium because they are rarer and the fact they are allowed on ebay boosts the price.

Though if you do a little searching there is a guy that turns them into "lamps". I thought about turning mine into "flower pots". :tongue3:

I am not sure if it works but the lamp guy seems to get all his through.

I've had experience selling the blue cornflower pattern ones on eBay. The trick (at least 2 years ago) was to just photograph the interior metal parts of the pot and put "parts only" in the auction title. Then, in the auction description, say something like "this auction is for parts only, but I can send the original pot and lid if requested". That used to get around the restriction. Since the 10-cup blue cornflower coffee pots sell in the $30-$50 range, it was worth it to pick them up.

With this rare black pattern, you'd want to include a photo of the pot as well, so this method might be problematic. I've seen other folks sell them by putting a Buy-it-Now of $40 or $50 on the auction and trying to get the sale completed in one day before eBay pulls it.

I think I would be ok because this pot was not part of the recall. The collar is screwed on not glued. I have seen the parts thing too, however they don't seem to be going for much, $10-$15 range.

As I recall, someone here sells these or know quite a bit about them. Maybe "Famous"??
