Hello dugin, GREAT find That is veeeeeeerrrrrrrry interesting. Never seen a cent date like that? It will be interesting to see what the experts have to say but I think it looks like an unknown mint error- one for the books. congrats. HH yelnif

It looks like it is just damaged to me, it may have taken a hit with something that displaced a little bit of metal.

I have to disagree with you on that, there isn't a number on any coin that it that much higher than the other numbers and after looking at it more taking in consideration the surrounding metal of the number and numbers that's more improbable than an error.

I have a friend over who has a PhD in Chemistry who like me says there is no way a number can be moved or manipulated without more damage.

well I guess that would be 6 over 5, never heard of a decade digit overpunch, I'm not an error expert,
but look thru the error examples and see if you can find anything remotely similar, there are no date errors listed
for the 52 cent.

Did some looking at errors, haven't seen anything remotely like it. This is a strange one compared to all the errors I've been able to find and now do understand the opinions of those who think it maybe damage. You have the pictures. And thanks Recondigger for blowing up the date picture.

With all due respect, what qualifications would a doctorate in chemistry imbue to this discussion ???
Metallurgy or mathematics :laughing7: would be more appropriate areas of expertise.
A mis/repunched date is all about damage to the metal.
Please let us know if you can find any remotely similar 'genuine mint errors' on the web.
