Can you tell what this buckle was for?

Also, it is engraved. Does anyone recognize the name?
I assume it's the manufacturer, and with that I hope I can date it somehow.

Looks like "Smith" at the beginning, but I'm not confident of the "S". Maybe "macher" at the end?
I'm afraid to toothpick further as the edges started to break off.

pretty sure it's a suspender buckle. engraving is most likely the brand name, but I don't know what it is

The brand is Smithmade. I copied this ad from a post by BigCypresshunter

Well done!
My mind would never have allowed me to read "Smithmade". Wouldn't register, lol.

Company organized in 1902. The few ads out there are 1910.
I'm good with that.

thank you!
