Emerald wreck?

Do a search here on TNet-there are some old threads about the alleged wreck. Amazing that is was reported found 12 miles offshore-just enough to put it in international waters. I have a follow-up newspaper clipping somewhere in my files, after all the news stories came out around 1993, that basically debunks the whole story.

I. I do not believe that any 1715 treasure ships went down in the Cape area. I believe all went down south of the Cape.
2. I read the article about Cortez. Was a good story. I also noticed that the chest they were pulling up was still in in a box shape-hard to believe that it was in such fine condition.

What I am interested in is were the any emerald bearing ships in the 1715 fleet that were carrying a large number of chest containing emeralds.
Are there any SHIPS MANIFEST that shows which ships were carrying emeralds?
Just another crazy idea I am working on.

Don, I am not aware of any of the 1715 ship manifests lisiting boxes of emeralds. However, if you know the 1715 fleet story well enough, I think it is safe to assume that probably all of the ships in that fleet had contraband emeralds of some sort, whether loose stones or inlaid in jewelry.

Remember too that no chest of emeralds were listed on the Atocha manifest, but divers are still vacuuming stones up in the 'Quicksands' even today.
 

There are very few mentions of emeralds in the manifests from the 1715 fleet, but let's not forget that every ship had many 'boxes of gifts". Emeralds make nice gifts. :D The boxes marked "gifts for the queen" would likely have many emeralds. Ubilla's capitana had the lions share of these, but there were a few in other places as well, like the Urca deLima and Nieves. A very large emerald was recently found near Sebastian...oddly enough, it was determined to be a muzo emerald...which should not have been aboard the 1715.

Hey Guy, Remember that the 1618 ship was wrecked right off Wabasso wher that emerald was found. Perfect timing for a Muzo emerald.

Read it and weep. May 13, 1967, Cabin Wreck. Carl Baum reports 1 inch diameter green stone found. If that's an emerald, it was pretty healthy. I wonder if that is mouldering away in Tallahassee in a shoe box under the old Capitol Building?

That came out of Tommy's files... the whole page is in "Rainbow Chasers", but he has a lot more of that sort of thing. Might put them in book 2 at 8.5 by 11 inch. It would be a spiral bound job, printed on demand, complete with color photos, maps, and narratives, but mostly reproductions of field notes. What do you think?

When I was up in Tallahassee a few years back, Roger Smith pretty much let me and Westrick wander around unescorted in their offices and I found the file cabinets that have all of the old log sheets going back to the Real 8 days. My eyes lit up when I opened that drawer. I hope to get back one day.
 

Deepsix has a ziplock bag full of emeralds he found.

Thanks for the picture of the field notes. I often wondered where the bright green pieces of sand came from when inspecting encrusted artifacts with my loop. From reading the field notes it would seem that that sand could be small pieces of emerald. Is there another source of emerald looking sand in Florida waters?

The bright green pieces of sand have nothing to do with EMERALDS.
It is simply an chemical process, usually associated with artifacts that are either cuprous or been in contact of such.

Don, I was acquainted with a man that grew up in Ft. Pierce and he told me that in the early 70s Mel offered him and his friends a proposition. That they could mag for him off of the Corrigan area a couple of miles out for a ship that he believed to be carrying a large quantity of emeralds. They would use his mag and their boat and they were not to get into the water, just find the area and his divers would check it out. He gave them a very lucrative contract if they found the emeralds, but they did not do it as they had to buy their own gas for the boat and put up 5K as a security deposit for the mag and being in high school they didn't have that kind of money for the project. The man now lives in Mass.

The bright green pieces of sand have nothing to do with EMERALDS.
It is simply an chemical process, usually associated with artifacts that are either cuprous or been in the closeness of such.

Trez are you saying that a EMERALD Bleeds. (Afraid not ). As you know an Emerald is HEXAGONAL in shape and does not absorb other elements nor does it put them out. To I.D. an emerald all you have to do is do a Specific Gravity test and this will take only a few minutes. Of course you can always do a SCRATCH TEST if the stone is clean of encrustations.
The stone that the State has should have been I.D.ed as soon as they saw it since it was a complete crystal.
I do understand that emeralds do break and that the pieces will take on new shapes other than Hexagonal.
Trez, Can you please explain your statement as to what makes GREEN SAND other than a dye.

After taking a closer look at the drawing it does show a HEXAGONAL SHAPE.
This PLUS THE COLOR should have been enough to ID the stone as being an EMERALD.
Did you know that a aluminum rod has almost the same S.G. as an Emerald or a piece of Granite.
