Friend found this yesterday while beach hunting. Possible Spanish Fleet item?

Seriously?

He is dead serious, but could be wrong. Location found is without a doubt correct. I don't know, but it has a vibrant luster in sunlight.

FWIW, the size from top to bottom is about 7/8" overall, frog is about 3/4", width is 1/2".

Seems at times finding stuff is a mere portion of knowing what you really have.

Have no idea if its from the Spanish Fleet, but that is a neat find. Something different from the norm...... :icon_thumright:

Well, if it does prove to be some kids trinket, which you guys seem to think it is, then so be it.

If not and it is something, good for my friend.

He's not to worked up either way, a few more years and he has an entire retirement to search the local beaches.

One day he may find his gold coin.

PK

I am betting that it is from the fleet. Just my 2 cents worth. I am hoping too....Nice find either way. jgas

Get with Mel Fishers gang and see what they say.

Did you test it with a magnet, or test it for gold or silver?......It looks to me like it is a kid's jewelry.

Good luck and good hunting.........

I like the frog as well, even if he never sailed with the Spanish fleet (which incidently, he didn't).

Johnny what are the key points that you are using to say it is not from the Spanish Fleet?

Maybe from Spanish Harlem

Ronbo22 Happen to have GPS coordinates for that location? We can see if it's close to where he found the Frog.

I think thats sand.

But green epoxy paint does not sound like a Spanish shipwreck item. Was it found on the Treasure Coast?

Yes it was found on a Treasure Coast beach, with a known wreck offshore.

My first to were green epoxy, but in sunlight this thing has a glow to it, and under magnification, it doesn't seem painted.

The metal part was tested by a local jeweler and indicated 22k gold.

The metal doesn't appear to look like gold at all from the pictures posted. Look at the bottom of the frog it looks like cast emtal. What process did the jeweler use to test it?

Why don't you post a picture of it clean with out all the sand?

What part is gold? What part is not metal? Is it plated?

Honestly I'm not sure what method was used. If I got the details correct, it was tested starting for 12k and turned out to be 22k.

It, without doubt, has an odd texture, there has been mention of some items being silver over gold for various reasons.

I will say the owner is planning to get it cleaned up, possibly by someone with experience recognizing if this is a novel find or worthy. If it is modern, then damage would be no big deal, but if the possibility is there for it being old, and damage happened while cleaning or being stupid, well, that's somewhat unforgivable.

I personally don't know enough about jewelery to say what it is, I'm just waiting like the owner.

If it does happen to be legit, seems a bit unique compared to coins.

PK

Looks a little too cutesey to be Spanish fleet. I cannot see how that could possibly be 22k gold...lacks the lustre or color of high karat gold. Not doubting the OP but do doubt the jeweller and his methods.

The entire frog seems to be a plated, but worn away plating, metal.

The green portions under magnification almost seem "cut", and the little white specs, well, they are crystal looking and don't just fall or flake off.

Again, I just don't know.
