found this today at an old colonial cellar hole looked like an oval button at first but now i'm not sure it says "warranted proved" around the top and just under theres somekind of bird (maybe a pheasant or rooster i don't think its an eagle) under the bird it looks almost like a crown and i think under that is a shield with 3 lions or lion like animals . it has a type of shank but its off center with a small hole .any help would be appreciated. thanks

All I can come up with is the British crown and the 3 lions of England.

It's not pewter and what did you do to it that made it so hard to photograph?

I don't think it is a button.

I did a search for the words Warranted & Proved together. I found old levels (tool) and swords marked as "Warraned/Proved".

Not sure that helps much, but maybe it will give someone else a clue.

P.S. Can you do a pencil or charcol rubbing of the image? It looks like a Pokemon to me... :o :icon_scratch: ;D

You should keep in mind how you took that first shot, would work great for things that actually have a green patina.

Don't leave pewter in olive oil for an extended period of time, it will eat down to the core metal.

Someone should know this. In a quick search the words and what looked like an eagle design were on an early sword hand guard. Someone should know this button.

Could it be for a drum or other instrument. Can't find a rooster coat of arms that matches. Don't ask why, but I'm thinking French.

sorry IP the shading in the first picture was misleading it did make it look like patina but there's only grey pewter color and dirt and it was a metal restorative and perseving oil (i didn't say olive oil) don't use the stuff . i hope your right about someone knowing or having an idea as to what it is .thanks

Curious what you're using any type of oil for on pewter? I really can't think of a purpose.

"WARRANTED" and "PROVED." The two words appear together on British hardware. I find references to the words on tools and swords. Your thingee is a bit elaborate for a tool. I'd look to weapons. That bird looks distinctly like a pheasant, which in heraldry signifies a "person of resource."

If I had to make a guess I'd say an early pistol escutcheon or butt cap.

intersting but wouldn't the escutcheon or but cap be held with a screw like in the picture ?? but it would make sense for the long sturdy shank to fit into a slot and be held with a pin , but the question is " to what" . thanks for the ideas

That is a but cap, an escutcheon / thumb plate maybe could have been held on a pin, especially if it had to rotate slightly. Again just a guess not really being a gun guy.
