Duke of Wellington looks a good match :icon_thumright: (Collar Badge, it is :icon_thumright: ) - I'm now wondering if they maybe later, maybe WWI :icon_scratch:

That'd be it! Though there isn't a photo of the badge, this references the reason for the badges:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/nlscotland/2958749100/ (Photograph taken of the British Western Front in France ~ WW I)

"The collar badges of the regiment show small elephants to commemorate the regiment's earlier service in India".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_of_Wellington's_Regiment

"in 1787, for service in India, by the Honorable East India Company".

'The Elephant became the Collar Badge of the Regiment, following the merger of the 33rd and 76th Regiments. ' When was this?

Found it - 1881 (so post this date)

So in summary:

Post 1881 Duke of Wellingtons (West Riding, Yorkshire, UK) Collar Dog (Badge).

You beat me by seconds. My book shows 33rd buttons worn until about 1881. Then it goes on to the 76th.

http://www.dwr.org.uk/dwr.php?id=108

or it could be one from the mentioned Alliances and Affiliations? The photo (in my post above) references the badge still being worn in WW I...

Probably because it seems like a more general type device, otherwise it would include the Regt. name or number. Sounds like it's not something that can be narrowed down a whole lot more.... unless he can find a button!

The relics you found with it would probably give a good idea what part of that time frame it was used.

above is the capbadge version missing its 76th below, but the construction & general looks seems earlier than yours, so I'll stick with post 1881 :icon_thumright:

Quite the strange find for the smallest state in the USA...Rhode Island..
What could have been the reason for this person to be here....
Although i did find a British general service button last month at like 14 inches with the Special Edition T2..This detector is amazing i must say..
