Well now you know two because I'm in Egypt, just haven't updated my profile! Jason, it isn't NEARLY as bad as everybody says here, although I agree most surrounding countries are a bit hot at the moment. So, any ideas?

Any good dive sites? Absolutely.

You should check out the Carnatic. It's a pretty well known dive site these days so I assume any local dive shop should be able to point you in the right direction.
The Carnatic sank in 1869 carrying wine, cotton, gold and copper. She was salvaged. But you never know if they missed an ingot or a bottle of wine. Maybe you will get lucky.

I believe she is located on Abu Nuhas Reef at a depth of between 55 and 90 feet.

You could also search for the Yasaka Maru if you have the resources.

She sank in 1915, approximately 15 miles offshore from El Borolus (al burrullus?) Lighthouse and carried a cargo of gold. However, the amount is questionable. The reports varied from 200,000 to 12.5 million worth.

The Yasaka Maru was only partially salvaged once in the 1930's by a Japanese diver named Kataoka. At the time, it was thought that a salvage was impossible. But he still managed to recover some gold.

Egypt is safe, I live there and the international media propaganda just makes me role on floor laughing :)
For the dive sites, yes there are a full documented lists of wrecks you may find in major dive center, hurghada got many wrecks for example, but don't even think about taking any thing you find within borders with you out of Egypt, or you will get yourself into huge trouble, relic hunting in Egypt is extremely forbidden, even possessing relics is. You can offer your help to the local expeditions authorities if you are just doing it for hobby though, but you will have another obstacle which is bringing a MD with you, which need a legit license. I'm trying hard to just get one for meteorite hunting and still working on a legal license with no luck so far.

Mike

Probably plenty of wrecks.

Anybody know of any interesting dives/leads around Egypt? There's gotta be some interesting stuff out there!
Alpha divers in Cyprus would be a good place to ask around, chat to Eric a buddy of mine from my military days, good guy will give you whatever advice he can; no doubt about that
