OAHU, HAWAII
Hi Everyone,
Dug this egg??? at a old dump site, same size as a regular egg, judging from the glass we've been finding the dump is from the late 1800's to the early 1900's, the egg is solid and smooth, it's not glass or wood I'm pretty sure about that, it is made of some sort of very hard material made to last and has weight to it, my closes impression of the egg is similar to a cue ball, any information and input would be appreciated, thank you for your time, aloha from Hawaii

Pretty sure it's called a Darning Egg and would have had a handle attached. It was used to slip into a sock for repairing or Darning a hole.

No tube socks when those were needed. Like everything clothes were expensive and socks could last a long time with proper care. Cool find!

Can you tell what the wood is?

I have 4 or 5 different darning eggs, but none of them really look like that, nor are they heavy.

I would be looking into the fishing area, because it really looks like a running line weight.

Hi thank you for your response, the egg does not have any numbers, I am not sure if it's wood either, it very similar like if you where to hold a pool ball in billiards, its smooth to the touch and hard like a pool ball, the weight is slightly lighter then a pool ball, it shape just like a egg and has a hole on the bottom but does not go all the way through, I had it in acid to clean off the black stains from being in a dump that has been burnt, I was able to take some of the stains off, it seems as though the true color is a light brown tan color, the dump is from the late 1870's to the early 1900's up to around the late teens, I would say the egg must be at least a 100 years old, it's a mystery to me.
All your input so far has been truly appreciated, thank you 808kaz

Give us a couple more pics from different angles of the partial lettering and the end of medicoi and we may get this one solved. :icon_thumright: Im guessing medically related.
