When I first started in this hobby I was told by an Ole Timer that when it came it relic hunting, that it was based on 10% knowledge and 90% imagination, because it took that imagination to see what they had done with the material they had....I have a pretty vivid imagination, but we all do, it's just if we put it to work...I have 4 pieces here that I believe are effigies.....The first one is of a bear, which I have seen other pieces on the internet that was very similar to this and made of the same material, the second one I think is a pipe in form of a fish, but not sure if its broken on the 'back side or not...The third is of a face made from a red stone, it appears to be unfinished on the left hand side in pics...The last one looks to be a Chef with headdress looking up to the skies...The fourth of a bird....Even if these turn out to be just figments of my imagination the what an imagination and still having the ability to let it run free...I hope you enjoy

My friend, I think we are long lost relatives. I have been where you are, and it is the brink of sanity. Once you go ahead and fall off the deep end, you'll be able to hunt without being distracted by mother natures effigies. I hunted for 20 years and never brought any geofacts home. I was ignorant. All I knew to look for was flaked material. Once I started reading about what I was finding, I realized flaked lithic hardly scratched the surface of what one needs to look for. The shish hit the fan!! Every rock I saw was an effigy, and if someone disagreed, well..., they were just stupid. Stick around here for a little while!! This is the site that got me back on track. The stage you are in is an advancing stage!! Keep that imagination! But, control it! I kept a few of the effigies my mind created. Also, you stole my line, "it's not for sale". I mean that line when I post it. Just for poops and giggles, I'll post a couple of the geoeffigies I have. In a few, that is

I have a large over strike flake that looks like a bear head. I am sure it wasnt done on purpose but it is the largest flake I have ever found. I have it in a frame with the other artifacts I found in the area of it. Its the one in the upper left of this frame.

I doubt anyone can say for sure how man y hands held those rocks before you. As to ALL effigies or fetish's being anatomically correct, clearly defined, with a strong resemblance to the animal being sculpted.....that is some fantasy!

Was every paleoperson who took up a scribe to scratch his art on the wall an artist?look at petroglyphs, like children scribbling on the wall, stick figures and all that.

Don't tell me, perspective hadn't been invented yet?

Call it what you want just don't say effigy, it causes some to twitch and stroke out.

Interesting first post.. Welcome to treasurenet. One thing about those scribblings... You can plainly see a person did it.

Welcome to Tnet.:icon_scratch:

Lakedweller, Effigies DO exist. But when forums like this are flooded with rocks that exhibit absolutely no sign of human modification, members react. As Gatorboy stated, petroglyphs are clearly made by Early Man and they are indeed art and simply cannot be used as a comparison to rocks that look like something. You want to see a real effigy? How about an Anasazi pottery bird effigy. This does not take much of an imagination to recognize.

I found this unique effigy this last fall. I kind of looks like a buffalo.

Cool eccentric piece...I like the flint it's made out of almost as much as the piece itsself

Well if Adam and Eve was actually the first people that were created then that makes us all related...lol...Believe me I pick up a lot of stones that seem to look like something, but I only keep the ones that need a little less imagination...Thank you for the post and I appreciate everyone's opinion

That is one of the coolest things I ever saw...Thanks for sharing that with me

If that is all that causes some to twitch and stroke out then apparently those some need a little less stress in their lives...Thanks for the comment

How about effigies on a larger scale?
This Middlesex County, MA turtle head is about 4 feet high. The ‘eyes’ are very smooth, like the bowls of the grinding stones I’ve posted elsewhere here.
