When I first started in this hobby I was told by an Ole Timer that when it came it relic hunting, that it was based on 10% knowledge and 90% imagination, because it took that imagination to see what they had done with the material they had....I have a pretty vivid imagination, but we all do, it's just if we put it to work...I have 4 pieces here that I believe are effigies.....The first one is of a bear, which I have seen other pieces on the internet that was very similar to this and made of the same material, the second one I think is a pipe in form of a fish, but not sure if its broken on the 'back side or not...The third is of a face made from a red stone, it appears to be unfinished on the left hand side in pics...The last one looks to be a Chef with headdress looking up to the skies...The fourth of a bird....Even if these turn out to be just figments of my imagination the what an imagination and still having the ability to let it run free...I hope you enjoy

I did enjoy. I will say if the last one is clay good chance it is. In two pinches you have a bird one on the head and a reverse squeeze for the tail . We made one just like that in clay and fired it. Probably all natural but how fun when you see something in them

I agree and I don't expect everyone to see what I do, but when you have the majority see it, without pointing it out of course then makes you wonder if it's really not, or if everybody was tripping on shrooms or something for them all to see it...But I have found nothing better for my sanity then finding this hobby

LOL.. all just natural rocks... they show no signs of human alteration.. but if you hold them the right way... kinda neat huh.

Your right and it's all a matter of opinion, that is until someone can come back from the past in a time machine, because if you ask me none of us truly knows without being there...Like I said it don't matter to me if they are or not cause I do this as a serenity and for my sanity and the minute I pick up a rock it becomes a part of my sanity...I just like hearing what other people have to say...And yes I do see them, does that make it wrong cause I do or would it make it wrong if I didn't?

hi fiesty, when they made an effigie you would be able to see it right away, you will not have to imagine it,they could of picked something up that they thought looked like something, but they would work on it and bring it out for all to see.nothing wrong with seeing what you want to see, just bring it out so others can as well

like faces in the clouds
all just natural rocks but it is all fun

hey feisty just take a look at the face on the scraper on T Wiko's avatar

The first one does look like a Zuni Bear. But it is natural and not altered.

Yes we do know if something is a man made artifact. There is a big difference. What you have was made by mother nature and considered a geofact.

Actually, the first one looks a bit like a meteor...which actually could have value...otherwise, they're all rocks.

Thank you all for your opinions....All that really matters I still have my sanity intact....I will see take a magnet to the bear to check if it has any iron in it for a meteorite....I'm not concerned at all of the value of the rocks...They aren't for sale even if they are worth anything, cause they help me worth a lot more then that

I lost my Sanity years ago..its not so bad. Mabey you will find mine. Good luck.

Fiesty, the thing one needs to remember is that Native Americans were as skilled at sculpture, or creating images in stone, as any other artistically inclined people throughout history. There is no need to look for imaginative effigies, so to speak, they were absolutely capable of getting their point across very clearly, with no ambiguity or guesswork involved at all. For example, here is a sandstone effigy. No problem here wondering if man or nature is the culprit. Effigies will be far more obvious then the rocks you're showing. I believe those are rocks showing no modification to create effigies. This one, on the other hand...

I do good to keep what little I got, let alone try to find someone's who done lost it

As long as they are unique I will collect them regardless...I'm more use to hunting flint work from where I am originally and all the other stones I haven't really developed an eye for yet

You know what Fiesty? A thousand years ago a young man might see a natural rock in a creek bed that looked just like a buffalo and he would pick that up and take it home. It might go into a personal medicine bundle or used as a charm, or just showed to people, because just like us, he thought it was a cool rock. You could also imagine this same young man showing this rock to some of the elders, and them sayin 'Naw, just a rock.' And I can imagine him thinkin the equivalent of 'Screw you, I like it so I'm keepin it.'

Is that first one as metallic as it looks?

Does it feel heavy for it's size?

Metal detector sound off on it?

Magnet stick to it?

It has some meteorite characteristics....at least it looks that way.
