Best one for last. Trez, check this out. Rincon 1537 or 1538 date, which would be only the second or third year since establishment of the Mexico mint and also the first or second year that the 4 reale denomination was struck. Obverse has a little doubling, but the reverse is better than the reference coin I was looking at (Menzell page 44, bottom left).

found a 1767 mexico pillar 8 just trying to figure out whats wrong with it the buy it now is only $140 us i figure the seller thinks it fake
but if not a bargain for someone

Seller looks legitimate feedbackwise (100%, 20091 sales), is not located in China, and there is a 7 day return period. I am not a price expert on pillar coins, so don't know what the coin would normally sell for....

hi again

yep that's me as highest bidder, my interest in pillar 8`s comes from the rooswijk wreck they are of course very expencive
the oldest on the ship were from 1732 (first year issue for pillar dollar) with f (Felipe Rivas Angulo as the assayer 1732-1733)
it then when to MF 1733-1754 Manuel De Leon and Antonio De la Pena y Flores the Rooswijk coins weree estimated to be 75% pillar dollars and 25% cobs (according to Ernie Richards in his book: Shipwrecks and their coins vol 4 the 1740 Dutch East indiaman rooswijk)

anywho enough for now

Dread, what do you think of my Pillar Dollar that I posted here? http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,300091.0.html

very nice 8, for a pillar to spend 228 years on the wreck and be in that condition wow!
your a lucky guy what did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking?
i am not 100% sure but but did the Hollandia Vliegenthart and Rooswijk all come form the same ship yard or were in fact sister ships?

Hey guys, I started a new thread titled "Pillars and Portraits". maybe we could move this discussion over there and try to keep it ongoing. Just an idea....

Sorry, Stan, I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I appreciate all that you have done, and I've learned a lot by studying various "selections".

Hey, no problem at all. Maybe the other thread will catch on. Thanks for the kind words Diver Down....

http://cgi.ebay.com/1640-TREASURE-OF-CONCEPCION-SILVER-8-REALES-POTOSI-MEX_W0QQitemZ190377043157

Not sure why this guy says this is a 1622 coin and that he found it on a 1715 beach. Same guy had it not too long ago and said it was from the Atocha, but lost his cert....

Little bit of a price cut since this was last advertised. Thought about buying it despite the light weight. It is hard to find a Maravillas coin with any detail left....

I wrote this guy and told him this was a replica and that the 13 grams ought to be a clue. He revised his listing to say 20 grams. Feel free to write him.... ;D

I have to say that I really appreciate this thread!!! I have wanted to buy old Spanish cob/coins for a long time now but I knew there were tons of fakes being sold. I am becoming more and more interested in the Conquistadors and their cobs but as a beginner I am overwhelmed by all the fakes that are on the market. Thanks DiveWrecks and everybody else that has contributed to this great thread!!!

Maybe someday soon I will make the plunge and actually buy a few cobs but for now I will just sit back and study what has already been posted here. :icon_pirat:

Thanks, feel free to ask any questions during your study. It is somewhat overwhelming at first, but you'll get comfortable. Let me know if you eventually decide on a particular coin type you have in mind and I'll be glad to give you some personalized picks to study and perhaps bid on.

The seller (Joel Ruth) is a respected conservator and I know that he was involved in coin preservation in recoveries from the Consolacion and Capitana wrecks in Ecuador among others. I have bought from him twice. You don't need to worry about his coins being legit. Most coins at 27 grams are considered full weight and many slipped below that. A 4 gram loss is not that unreasonable from a sea salvage coin. That being said, you can find examples from this wreck (Consolacion) with more legible features than this coin. There were two recently that showed quite a bit of detail. I'll keep my eyes open for you if you are interested in a coin from that particular wreck. By the way, there is a good book written on that wreck by a guy named Bill Seliger if you want to study the history.
