I found this stuff last october on my first trip to the east coast. Can anybody help identify the stand up type bells and the shield shaped piece? This stuff came from an old stone house in Connecticut that was used during the revolutionary war, there were 17,000 troops camped across the road and the house was used by the ranking officers. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks, Mace

This may be a silly question, but do the bells have clappers in them? Reason I ask, as I have one similar that has no clapper, and was told that it might be a candle snuffer.

Yes they do, it loks like one might have been damaged by a mower or something but they are definately bells, the shield piece has 2 posts on the back, it must be off of a saddle or such, not really sure, theres not much relics like those here in Iowa, lol

There are no marks on either as far as writing, just the decrative marks on the bells and the 2 fastners on the abck of the shield piece

Oh you beat me to it Iron spike! good Id. Harness Boss/shield Agreed..decoration

I love those harness Boss/shield. The one I found is very similar to yours and I seem to recall that mine at one point appear to have gild left in places ('cleaned' too much). Your piece also appear to have remaining gild or is it just the light?

The BEST find there is the colonial era "bat wing" buckle. I don't recall what they go for price-wise, but they are hard to find.

Walker halves are a dime a dozen compared to those.

Congratulations,

They look like bigger versions of the bells that bikers put on their motorcycles.

I would love to see a closer photo of the "bat wing" buckle if you get a chance and are willing to post it with something for scale, or a ruler in the photo. I have only seen one or at the most, two of these posted on Tnet in the several years I've been here.

Congrats again,

Buckleboy

Mace - Those Bells must be common in the North East , I found one 3 or 4 years ago while detecting in Northern NH at an old home site . I was told it was a Slay Bell . The Bell I found has a crack in it so I call it my Liberty Bell .
One other thing Mace did you ever get all of the Gold weighed up that you found while prospecting in NC a few years back .

A couple of few years ago, I found one of these type of "bells" that look just like yours. It was in the yard of an old home site (1900's) of a house that was being torn down. Small town on the outskirts of Philadelphia, which is about 35 miles away. It did not have a clapper inside. I will be keeping an eye on this thread to see if anyone else has any info. It did not resemble any of the other "bells" I have ever found... sort of thought it looked like a candle snuffer instead. And thanks to all for the info! - JHinPA
