Detector(s) used
Whites M6, Garrett ProPointer
I recieved my Garrett Pro-Pointer yesterday, and got to use it this morning. The thing is REDICulously cool and Da-Bomb! It works SO great! I picked up a signal with my M6 and broke out the pointer. It not only cuts your digging and time in half, I was laughing because at the base of a tall oak, I didnt pick my machine up for the next three or four digs! The pointer was going off all over the place and grabbed a pocket spill of clad, and several other coins in a four foot radius. Can't compare to any other pointer, cuz its the first and only one that I ever had, but my two cents is "Get One"!

Having owned an automax V4, the garrett pro-pointer, whites bullseye II, and bounty hunter pinpointer, I've got to say that the best pointer that I've ever used, and is always on my hip is the pistol probe. I have no problem detecting items 4-6" down before i dig em up and doesn't interfere with my safari. Havent had to change the two 9volts in the 9 months Ive had it using it 3-5 days a week for about 2 hours a day. just my two cents, and although a bit on the expensive side, definitely worth the extra cash.

You get to detect 3-5 days a week? Brother, do I envy you! :icon_thumleft:

This is the air depth I'm getting with my Pro Pointer.

1c - 1 9/16"
5c - 1 7/8"
10c - 1 1/4"
25c - 1 9/16"
50c - 1 13/16"
1.00 - 1 7/8"

I also have read the reviews about people getting from 1 1/2" to 2"+ on a dime but this is the results I'm getting. Preforming some tests I found that the longer the unit is turned on the more depth it can get with some units and this might explain why some people get around 1" and some 2".

You can also increase the depth by using some sort of metal object such as a coin, I use a thin piece of brass that came off an old school ruler and a rubber band. I can usually get 2 to 2 1/4" on a dime by using this crude adjustment but it works for the times you might want or need a little extra depth plus you can detune it, if you need less depth.

You should be able to answer that by yourself. Look at the readings you got. The bigger the item the deeper the detection depth. A soda can would be over 2 ". I would be inclined to believe as with noraml detectors a taregt that is buried a while gives a stronger signal.

[/quote]You got me baffaled with that demo i wonder why it works like that? I just tested my pro pointer like that i got 2 inches on a nickle then when i put a nickle on the side of my pinpointer i got 3 3/4 inches .......

The Garrett pro pointer picks up a dime at 3/4 " by actual air test video here on T-NET. It also cost $130. The HF pinpointer picks up a dime at the same distance and cost $16.99!
I use Snap On tools in my job as an auto mechanic and have been doing so for 35 years. Some of those tools were my dads before me and are over 50 years old. I could probably do the same job with Chinese tools sold by Harbor Freight or Wallyworld. What's your point ? :coffee2: I'll stick with my Garrett Pro Pointer. By shopping around on Ebay and watching the auctions patiently I got mine new in the box with a cheap plastic digger, pouch & a couple of small Garrett booklets for 80 bucks.

I guess how much depth you can get from a pin pointer !!! I will say the harbor freight one is as good as any of them . But i think the pistol probe is the best going,

My guess is the nickel changes the probes pattern, elongating it making it respond farther, in this case deeper. Definitely an interested demostration.

A few points I would make are: For me a pin pointer only needs a couple of inches detection at the max. More than this would make it hard to use. Most pin pointers are omni directional (sense in all directions). I can usually pin point with my detector to a 2-3 inch cicrcle.

I have not tried the nickle thing but you can bet I will.

WHY THE PRO-POINTER DETECTS DEEPER IF YOU HOLD METAL AGAINST THE HOUSING

This is from another forum by a guy that goes by Uncle Willy (Bill)

["Since the PP is a static detector and affected by stationary metal and does not tune it out as would a motion detector - by introducing another piece of metal ( your ring, a coin, piece of foil ) you've driven the detection signal that much closer to the detection threshold. Therefore it takes less target metal to push the signal over the detection threshold.

We know the PP will detect a larger object deeper so by placing a piece of metal on the housing it is just the basic accumulation of metal that drives the signal closer to the detection threshold. All this compliments of a Garrett engineer.

Good post and thanks.I was just about to contact Garrett to see if this would overload anything internally.Guess it will do no harm.

Just get a pistol probe and you won't need to do the "nickel trick" ;D

I tried the pistol probe first and the only thing I found that I didn't like about it was I just couldn't hear it even without headphones and have read other posts about how low the volume was even set to high. I contacted the manufacture about this and was told there wasn't any way to increase the volume. I contacted the dealer where I had purchased it and he told me that was the reason he didn't use it also, the volume being too low set to high. Seems like some guys don't have a problem hearing it and some do. Returned it for the Pro Pointer.

I had a Sunray on my GTI 2500 and it was OK, but I needed a seperate pinpointer for each of my 5 detectors and the Sunray was way out of my cost range for all five. Now I use a pinpointer and can use it on or with any detector. The Sunray is a bit pricey but it is really a very tiny coil instead of a true pinpointer. It will go pretty deep and usually you can signal a shallow coin without a detector if you know the area within a few inches or so, a great help for those that have trouble pinpointing with their detector. I'll stick with the Pinpointer for now. Monty
