At this point, I don't know if it's real or fake, just got it home.
I dug this at an older picnic spot. Feels slightly heavy, yet a magnet does not stick.
I'm used to my silver coming out of the ground shiney, although I've seen a few Morgans posted on here that were really tarnished. Can anyone please suggest a cleaning method other than electrolysis, as I'm not equipped for that. Thanks, ffd

It does not look real, but it is hard to say. It could have been through a fire. How did it show on the detector? If it is real, it should have been much higher than a quarter reading.

Have you tried washing it off? If it is real, it may clean up pretty easily. Once the dirt is removed you can try a tarnish cloth; the coin has very little numismatic value anyway.

If it is fake, it is interesting in itself!

looks like a fake 2 me !! :( too bad so sad !! Still a nice find!!

Well, at this point in time I'm calling it real. Or willing it real.
The church here burned in 1900, here are pics with slight cleaning, baking soda simmer. 1889 O. I have no scales to compare weight, but it sure "tings" and looks like silver to me.

still a nice find way to go :icon_thumleft:

I was going to suggest baking soda but I see you already took care of that. Looks like the real deal to me. Would you have any way to check the weight???

Congrats!

Did not know for sure if it was real until I saw the cleaned pics. Definatley real. WTG Nice find!

Hi...

don't no much about your coin :dontknow: but it looks like Silver to me, the hammered coins we find here come out quite often like yours did, Silver coins will go black when exposed to sunlight for a long period :read2: lemon juice is a good way to clean Silver coins

Thanks for the replies, all. This was an odd signal, between iron and high conductivity, I did not have high hopes when I dug that plug.

What looks fake to you about the coin? When every one else agrees it's the real deal.

Do not let people get ya down.
The coin is real looking to me and I go through "lots" of morgans.
I buy and sell them and IMHO it is real.
You can go to a coin dealer and get a liquid to dip the coin in and it
will help tons.
It cost like $5 and lasts for a long time.
I dip a lot of coins and it helps more then you can imagine.
Do not!!!! use baking soda on it.
Get a good dip and use that.

Should weigh 412 and a 1/2 grains, (Good luck with that) I've seen and sadly dug many burned coins, yours looks real to me. And in pretty decent shape as well.

26.73 grams. (Found the conversion)

I'm sure it's real... alot of people are quick to say fake if the coin doesn't look like they think it should look...

I am glad you were able to get an ID. Now it looks like the real deal! Good luck on the variety!!

It's a Fake!

Well, actually it does look real.

No it is definetly a fake.

Now I think it's real.

Seriously, I think it is real. Congrats.

That's a killer find! I've only managed to get one morgan in 17 years.
