it takes a lot of effort to drill a hole in a rock...folk don't drill random holes on random rocks when a simpler solution to a problem would require much less effort.

I see what you're saying it's easier to notch a stone than drill through one. But since this stone already has a natural hole going about 80% through it. It would require much less effort to grind out the other 20%. Jmo

and no doubt anyone who found a stone of sufficient size or weight with a hole in it would readily use it if it fulfilled a use, just as I do with a chunk of petrified wood I use as a book end.

Ok. I get work smarter not harder, but apparently my ancestors were not as smart as some on this thread. I'm Cherokee, descendant of James Swimmer via Sally Bullfrog. They did drill holes in random rocks and shells. They also notched rocks to assure that the line didn't slip. See, I actually confirmed my find (The weight) with an actual archaeologist. Some people work a little harder than others.

Do a Google search on "Hag Stones" and "Adder Stones".

Not saying yours aren't drilled - but holes with stones are common and natural.

I do know of Hag Stones and they are also quite neat. They are considered "lucky" or "spiritual". I wasn't saying it couldn't happen naturally either. What I was saying is that by studying the pics well you can clearly see that it has been tooled. The side that the hole began is oblong shaped from the back and forth motion created from applying pressure while drilling, kind of like when you try to put a screw into a board with a screwdriver without countersinking a hole first. Then as it gets to the end of the drill point it creates that countersunk appearance. Then on the other side of the rock the drill point would have penetrated. So now the hole gets worked from that side until desired size. But notice that hole is more circular do to less pressure needed on that side during drilling. If you look really close at his pics, you can see tooling marks at the hole site. Also, why would anyone make a comment on them not drilling random rocks when they clearly didn't know their facts?

Unless that deep straight scratch in the area in question is natural. Between it being countersunk and the tool marks I still think it's a possibility. I'll wait to see if anyone else wants to chime in before I mark it.

Hijacked? Come on Mr. mac. Where does it say anythng in the matter of me defending my pics? When did it ever become about my pics? My pics were strictly to show my support for a fellow member. As a matter of fact, If you noticed my pics didn't come until you decided you were going to tell Mintberry you knew for a fact it was "Natural". Then decided to make jokes when he was just trying to get answers. So therefore i posted pics of something I had that was similar that I knew wasn't "Natural". Then here you come with more jokes. So I didn't think you would think it was so funny anymore if I showed you my family background and showed I actually have studied the subject. Also being from Michigan, you know of many Tribes that have walked this land and these waterways. So that was another indicator for me that was what Mintberry found, considering he is from here. See this is the deal, when you go on forums and tell people that what they have is positively nothing when you clearly were not sure, then you make jokes and make comments about random people doing random things when you clearly did not know, that's discouraging. Now if you said it was "Natural" and showed supporting evidence of your claim instead of liking other's posts in the thread that actually did the research to support other possibilities and being a comedian, I'm sure people would receive it better. How many other people threw something out because of your shoot from the hip posts? So instead of saying I hijacked a post, maybe you should question why you came. I have learned to post what I know and help with what I don't. Try it sometime. Or maybe you can find a good Comedy Forum. There isn't anything wrong with not being sure or wrong for that matter. Nice find once again Mintberry, keep up the good work.

Still looks natural to me. Possibly crinoid stem or piddock clam hole (they "eat" into rocks).

Below are all fossilized crinoid stem pieces and you can see "countersinks" and orbital marks all around the holes.

Trade you for a picture of a drilled hole that is oblong.

Both you and Ibinc's stones are worked by the Jesuit priest. They were very talented with stone. It can be found coast to coast. Each stone tell a story. Some it's the same story

I must have had a guy that stuttered living in my creek then. Same story over and over. I had a piece of rope with at least 20 of those strung on it that I gave to a kid up the street that thought it was cool.
