My brother worked for years for a municipal water and wastewater department. He said that there were two fellas who could dowse in the department. They used them to locate water lines, drain lines, lost tools or anything else that was buried. The department had all the conventional methods of locating buries things, like metal detectors and thumpers etc., and though they would use those too, they usually found it easier to request one of the guys to grab his rods and show up on site.

Rods will cross as you walk over buried lines or cables.

I have a place in the yard my L-rods always crossed over the same spot for years. Then one day, utility company came to the door. They wanted to hook on to our gas meter, trace a signal using 2 box detector all the way to the lot next to our lot line. Their 2 box detector beeped right across the very spot my L-rods had crossed for years.
