Wasn't/isn't just the loggers huge trickle down effect. They lost the same way we are losing now and no one learned from it. Simple- List a species as endangered (spotted owl 1990), create an area of critical habitat ( few million acres spanning three states), establish a plan where the environmentalists work with the government (northwest forest plan), finally limit (stop) the economic development in the critical habitat zones.
Twenty two years later you have a government hearing admitting it was a colossal failure, and note that the owl is still declining. Then to fix it you tack on a few million more acres (9 million total) of critical habitat. Funny sidebar some of the best habitat available has near non-existent populations. While hour at it don't address the non native barred owl from the east coast that has moved in and is competing for the same habitat. Nor do you address that they may be breeding so now what is a true spotted owl and what is a barred owl. Which in another twenty years will be its own subspecies they can list and start all over.
