Re: What's up with this Backmark?

Wow! SCOVILL MFG. CO. / WATERBURY and HORSTMAN BROS. & CO. / PHILA.

How is that possible? :icon_scratch:

Re: What's up with this Backmark?

A few years ago I bought my first metal detector and shortly after I found my first button. Since then I have looked at many buttons on the internet. Buttons have kinda taken a special place in my heart. I love any and all buttons. I have only found one that maybe from the civil war. But, out of all the buttons I have looked at in the past few years, I've never seen one double stamped. Maybe someone will chime in that knows more about buttons than I do. What I'm getting at is, this may be a rare find. I'm sure it's not the only one but in all my looking I have never seen one. I think something like this would stand out like a sore thumb. I sure hope Montana Jim sees this post.

My trigger finger is poised above the banner button.

So this was, in fact, dug? My first and only theory is that it's a test button for forgery purposes. But knowing you dug it versus acquiring it from someone only deepens the mystery. I spent a couple hours researching this and couldn't find any triple stamped buttons. The plot thickens.

Nothing about this adds up. I've reached out to a friend at the VA Historical Society.

Re: What's up with this Backmark?

I've seen this before with the same backmarks. I know that sometimes a company making buttons for someone else might stamp over backmarks to fill an order for another company. Also if a company name was changed or one company bought out another they might stamp over the old backmarks. Being Scovill & Horstmann are different companies the only thing I can figure is they had someone else making some buttons for them for some reason. And this company had backs left over from a Scovill order and reused them for a Horstmann order. Hopefully someone will know for sure.

What type of spot was this dug at?

Re: What's up with this Backmark?

No offense but the Scovill mark dates 1860 to 70. The Horstmann mark would date about the same but may go a bit later.

I have the SCOVILL MFG CO. WATERBURY backmark on many post 1902 Great Seal buttons. ???

I guess the point is that they can be basically from the same era. Unless you mean something else. :dontknow: I imagine there is a lot of overlap. The link has the dates as Mack says but your books are probably better.

It gets confusing trying to pin a date on these Scovill backmarks. Great seal buttons below:

Re: What's up with this Backmark?

Maybe the rinng of dots makes these Scovills older, which is absent on my Great Seal backmarks.

Re: What's up with this Backmark?

It's the size and depth of the letters, the rings and the stars that help date the Scovill backmark. there are a lot of variations of Scovill and Horstmann marks.
The books are better as most links are to general and don't show the different variations. I've been messing with this stuff to long too and that helps some. :tongue3:

Re: What's up with this Backmark?

I just found a Great Seal ring of dots. Same lettering and stars. :icon_scratch:

Apparently they used old stock for WWI.

I think the point is irrevelant because they are both CW era backmarks.

Re: What's up with this Backmark?

I've never seen that backmark on a great seal button but don't usually fool with them that much. I've seen them with a ring of dots just on the inside around the shank. Does your's have a ring of dots on both the inside and outside of the letters? I'm not sure but I don't think a back from an eagle button would fit in a great seal button. The type of eagle on the button in the post was used until 1875 and I'm pretty sure the backs are shaped differently than the later buttons.
