Don't Know At All

Hi All,

I dug this what's it back in the fall at my what's it foundation. I call it that because the ratio of things I can't identify is high compared to what I can. i haven't found too many coins at the foundation. But dug a nice crotal bell and some nice two piece buttons. So if any one has any idea what this is I sure would like to know. Thanks for looking and for any help any one can give.

Well judging by the very nice design, it was meant to be seen, perhaps something like a Belt or Cloak Clasp :dontknow:...nice find :icon_thumleft:

I have found things this shape before/different style---------------i think it was some type of lock in the round part!

Re: Don't Know At All

I am also going with belt buckle tip...looks like leather would have been crimped to the back and a stud would have mated with the hole....
Either this, or a picture hanger???

Re: Don't Know At All

I think it is part of an Officer's badge from a fraternal organization like the Knights of Columbus Immaculate Conception Council. I think the badge/pin belonged to a Inside & Outside Guard. The Inside and Outside Guards each have the same symbol for their jewel. They are in charge of security at the meetings and are to assist the Warden as needed. The jewel for the Guards consists of Crossed Axes and Key, representing their authority as sentries at the door, is suspended from a white ribbon.

I'm not saying it is a K o C badge, but am saying I think it belongs to some type of fraternal organization 'like' them. The symbolism of the 2 crossed axes & the key could be basically the same for any organization.

Neat find, Breezie

Re: Don't Know At All

I'd say some type of buckle or end piece.I found one like it awhile back at a mid to late 1800's site.Mine has a different back though.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Re: Don't Know At All

I will add this mine is very thin made so what ever it was used for did not require much strength.I always considered it to be some kind of suspender buckle.Mine clearly had a pin at one time.

Re: Don't Know At All

I wouldn't have a clue from experience. But it looks to me like an ornate front to some sort of lock, like the cover plate for a door, or a box.

I'm not to good on the late 19th century stuff but I would bet it went on a suspender buckle. One was the strap & one was the overalls them self. And would had went together with a hook sorta like below.Just seems to much like the same construction to me.

I agree, it looks like a lock plate from an old leather satchel or suitcase

Re: Don't Know At All

Do you think this suspender buckle was made for a fraternal organization or do you think the crossed axes & key were a 'generic' thought? Breezie
