Dont forget that parts have value too...

Lets keep this thread going. Here is my latest "part" that I found. It's an Aladdin alacite lamp finial. They sell for between $20 and $30 respectively. I got it for .25 -

Here is another parts story, albeit many years old:

My cousin has been a successful ebayer. Back when Singer Featherweights were selling for moon money, she went to a well advertised auction and paid $365 for a pair of Featherweights. When she got home, she learned that one ran fine, the other did not.

Her husband tried to repair the broken Featherweight, and found that the motor was bad. They decided to part it out.

The running machine sold for $325, but the non-running machine, when parted out, sold for nearly $450, all total.

I think my eyes are opening to a whole new avenue for me to continue to make money, especially since we are headed toward the time in my area when the garage sales are dwindling down and I have rely heavily in my local (and not so local) thrift stores. Once again, this site has proven to be most resourceful - thanks to the valuable input we share! Thanks everyone!

Last sale I went to there was a bag of attachment from an old food processor that had burned out and they had thrown away - blades, guides, etc. Whole bag for a dollar. Have to list and see what kind of return I get.

I recently picked up a woodworking gizmo at an estate sale for $9.

I've owned and sold many of these gizmos in the past. The most that I've ever sold one of these on ebay was $55. Generally, these sell in the $35 to $40 range. Nice ones can fetch up to $60 or so, but they better be in like new condition with no issues whatsoever.

The example that I bought at auction last week was not complete (missing one part), and was missing the box. At best, I don't think it would have brought much over $25, on a good day, because of the missing box.

We split the gizmo into parts, and have already sold $59 in parts, and still have a box of parts still on hand. I probably still have $100 worth of parts listed to sell. Some of the parts will be a difficult sale, and it might take a while to move them, but we are already into profit on this gizmo.

I bought a kit that goes on to a wood router for making signs at a yard sale. After getting it home I noticed it was not complete therefore useless. I think I will piece it out as well.

Diggumup, I love your signature line...Very true!

I think I have the same kit. I bought this one at auction, and got home, only to realize that one of the numbers was broken.

Just two weeks ago, I bought two large trays of the same numbers and letters.

I am thinking about parting both the kit and the trays out.

Did Sears sell the numbers and letters in bulk, outside of the kit??

As far as I know they did not. Mine is a sears kit as well. I forget exactly what is missing out of my kit. But I am thinking someone will like some of the pieces...

I just sold another $20 part from this gizmo. I'll have to pay for shipping, so that leaves me with about $15 net before fees.

That brings the new total to about $74.

Since my last posting on this thread, we've sold another $37 in parts from the wood working gizmo.

This has been so profitable that I will probably never sell another one as a set. I'll be parting them out.

I might even start shopping for complete sets on ebay. I could have bought them for a song over the summer.

I also found a Marx train car part in the bottom of a box of Lionel Trains that I bought a few months ago.

Whole and complete cars that use this part aren't selling for much more than $20. Many examples of this car aren't even bringing $10.

I listed the part with free shipping, and it sold quickly for $9.99.
