Hi,
I would like to ask for some help from the other folks on this forum. I found the attached item on a terraced field in the Central Czech Republic. Object was buried about 20 cm deep. Other items found that day in the vicinity were some mid 19th century Austro Hungarian Kreuzers and the occasional late 19th century coin.
It appears to be gold and the dog has a small gem as its eye. The flipside appears to have three rows of strange writing. The small dots below the dog remind me of something one would find decorating medeival books. Within 2 km there is a 13th century ruin and I do know there was a Hussite siege in the area during the middle ages. Also, there were numerous partisan attacks on German troops near the woods in the second world war.
Again the metal appears to be gold. I do not get a lot if gold artifacts, rather silver, so this is a rarity for me.
I plan to do some further detecting in the area because I am getting a lot of deep iron hits on the detector nearby where the golden dog was located.
Any help in establishing a timeline and idea of what the object was used for exactly would be helpful. Thanks 233BC989-CEDC-41B7-A888-826384B080D9.jpegE96B9B1D-4B4F-4A1B-914E-BCB5F5BEEEE7.jpeg2E658E10-BCE3-4D7B-9CC1-5FE8EA2742F3.jpeg

Interesting piece.

I have to admit I'm having trouble seeing a dog with a gem for an eye.

Could you please make a pencil and paper sketch of what you see?

Also sketch the writing?

I don't see anything but a little shine that resembles gold either. Gold usually doesn't tarnish so why is it black? Have you had the metal tested to see if in fact it is gold?

Ya, I understand how it may be difficult to see the dog. Attached a couple more photos . You almost have to see the piece in person....or I need to learn how to take better photos. Apologies for the quality. I am not 100 percent certain it is gold. Honestly, I am way more interested in the history of the item rather than the type of metal. There is a castle down the road from where I live and the local historian will be in tomorrow morning and I will stop by and have a coffee and chat with him as he knows a lot about the battles and sieges between the neighboring castles. I will keep you posted.

Now I see the dog. I still can't see the writing.

I think the metal is brass.

The piece is quite small. It could be part of anything.

Quick research tells me dogs have been popular in your country for a long time.

Hand etching could be old or could be crude folk art. It looks like I drew it. :laughing7:
