Does anyone know what type of stone this is?

Hi All,
It is a very neat stone bequeathed by a family member.
I had no idea until I took the close up pictures that the stone was anything but black in color.

To the eye the stone appears deep jet black. It has a smooth, glossy and almost oily texture, but the camera lens picked up colors I had no idea were there.
The stone is not polished.

I have looked around online to try and identify it from pictures but I have not found anything that looked close enough for me to call it.

Four pictures there, flickr has a nice zoom feature that lets you look close up if you click a pic and let it load the slideshow.

If anyone has any guesses? :)

Don't know where the stone came from but it is similar in appearance to hematite at my place here in Western North Carolina. Hematite will streak red and is non-magnetic.

Thank you for the replies both, you guys are good! I looked it up after reading your posts and found some hematite that matches it exactly, so thanks.

I have uploaded three pics of a different stone that has been lying around for years, it is almost completely round, shaped just a little bigger than a baseball. The pics do not really give the full display, it does glint a little when you rotate it under a light.
The three pics are taken over a minute as the rock went from moist to dry.
Someone suggested a possible geode once, just in an off hand manner. I have always wondered what it might be.
Thanks again!

The first two look like granite and diabase/gabbro. Perhaps water worn, which can give it a polished appearance.
