this was found in a field by a farmer. no one seems to know what it could possibly be. any help would be appreciated!! It is solid plastic, when held to a light you can see the outline of a square inside the block. it is
3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. it is 3/4 inches thick. it was in a pouch that looks like carhardt coat material with velco straps. there are numbers in the bottom : 1202K smaller numbers and 212976 larger numbers.
Thanks for helping!!

They use receivers of some kind on Florida Panthers to keep track of their movements here in Florida, but the collars are much stronger. I have watched them track down the big cats by triangulation. When one stops moving, they get out their antennas and locate the animal to see why it isnt moving anymore. Sometimes they find a receiver on the ground.
In this case, why didn't the owner triangulate and come back for it?
I still think the heavy red rubber is protecting something electronic inside that is never meant to be opened or repaired, and needs to withstand a lot of abuse. The flimsy belt/pouch does not make any sense to me. :-\

Alot of people are saying it is a transmitter, and while it has the slight chance of being one, I very seriously doubt it. I've looked up about 50 different animal tracking radio receivers, and they all have a basic design. This thing here has a design that is made for a purpose, and to me, its to use as a weight for some kind of construction or engineering.
I bet that if you cut it open it is only a lead weight.

I've seen this item before somewhere.... AAARRGGHHH!!!! I should have never drank so much when I was younger, now I'm like Homer Simpson. Everytime I learn something new, I forget something old...

LOL That's funny. I too forget more than most people will ever know. :'(

It does not look like the kind that I have seen either.
But why put such protection on a lead weight? Also, about 1/4 oz. is not very heavy.
What about a tracking radio receiver for something or someone else?

I think it is a test weight of some sort..... If it was a transmitter, why seal it, how would you change the battery? Interesting object.

I don't know anything about tracking devices. Do they all use batteries?
I weighed something until I got 4.2 oz or .28 lb. (about 1/4 lb.). If it is a weight it is not very heavy. Try it yourself if you have a scale. It weighs about as much as a fork and spoon together, or about 1/2 the weight of your cellphone. It weighs a lot less than your computer mouse.

Looking at the slotted hole in the top. It is just about the right size for a strap or collar to go through.

This is an early tracking device, used for cattle.
I used to work for B I Inc. who make the ankle bracelets for criminals. Before they got into tracking criminals, the company made tracking devices for cattle and this looks a lot like one of their conversion prototypes. They used a reader to read the electronic card inside and used them to keep track of certain animals in the herd.
I hope this helps a little. Bigcypresshunter you were hitting all the way around the target.

Okay...since I am now obsessed with this..Thanks alot Tracie...
I went to a man who has trained hunting dogs.....he said that there isn't anyway that the device was hooked through a collar of a dog , because it would rub on the dogs neck and be uncomfortable for the dog, once the collar was tightened. He said that when dogs are running, you wouldn't want anything that would be bouncing against them or that another animal would be able to bite and pull at,such as a dangling bright piece of plastic. He said he has been training dogs for twenty years and has never seen a transmitter encased like that for any animal tracking. All the models he showed me had two slits or one in the back that slid through the collar and fit snug to the dog.

Next question....Tracie you said that it was long enough to fit around an ankle or wrist...which makes it a little small for any hunting dogs neck ...unless you have a bear hunting poodle..hmmm or cat....

.....so it was in a pouch ...an easy open pouch , which means that who ever was carrying it took it out and used it frequently....and used it enough that they needed to make a pouch to carry it with them.

So what type of person would be in a farmers field .....hiker,geologist, soil or water sampler, kids playing maybe.....surveyor, treasure hunter for sure...agriculture agent, tornado chasers....

Someone please figure this out !!!!!!!!!!.

While I was trying to post I read the post above me.....are you saying they put the velcro pouch w/ transmitter on a cows leg?

Thanks Gabby, That is the story of my whole life. Close, but not close enough! lol ;D
Thanks for figuring out this mystery. It will not work on a running dog, but would be OK on cattle.

If it was a cattle monitor , then it would be obvious why it never took off....cattle monitors began as neck bands and quickly moved to ear chips....to put something on the ankle of a 1000 lb animal that trudges through brush and grass all day ...well no wonder it didnt stay on.....I am not convinced at all...any one who has watched a cow get up off the ground ,has to admit this isnt the most graceful of moves and that flimsy velcro would be off in a minute...and why a pouch if it already had a hole in it to insert through the strap?

Everyone put their thinking caps on....we can figure this out.....

each strap is probably out 6 to 8 inches. a guy took it to show some people, so i can't measure them right now.

WE MUST IMMEDIATELY WHACK, HACK, SLICE, DICE AND OTHERWISE MUTILATE THIS OBJECT SO AS TO DETERMINE WHAT SINISTER SECRETS IT HOLDS IN IT'S DEPTHS...THIS MAY BE OF EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL ORIGIN. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?...DO YOU?...DO YOU?

THEY HAVE VELCRO!!!

Now we know why it fell off! Even 6-8" each side plus a couple is not big enough for a cows neck. Now that I see the back side, it appears to be homemade. I don't know why someone made a homemade strap/pouch when it has a hole for the strap. ??? But the man works for a place that used to make them, so I will take his word for it as to the ID of the red block. As for the pouch, I think a child made it for her special calf, lamb or pet.

I agree, from the beginning of this thread I was also thinking of a tracking or ID device. This would just be a non-powered ID tag that would be read/scanned I believe. It has ID #s on it, is well encased, and found in a field. All fits to me, except the pouch, but just because it was in the pouch doesn't mean they are directly related.

Maybe Mommy made the pouch and placed it around her small childs wrist so that the child would not get lost? umm better than a collar and leash ;D

I think that seeing as the pouch was hand made, it is obvious that whatever the plastic thingy is, it was not used for what it was designed for.

God bless

I don't know if it's relavent or not. But I'm not so sure the pouch or assembly (pouch and strap) are home made. Just an observance, but the crude stitching appears to me to be someones repair job to replace worn out velcro on the flap and to reinforce some of the old stitching on the sides.
But other than to say, perhaps sheep and not cows, and unless sheep have started using the fast- trac lane at the toll bridges. I don't have a clue what it is. HH
