What type of metal does it look like it's made from and what size are we looking at?

I'm pretty sure that you have here is a British Badge - Life Guards, George VI, brass slide badge (see pic below). The letters "GR" under the crown, stand for "George Rex", or King George. (the VI in this case) You can search GR Crown badge & find many similar examples. Hope this solves it / helps

Glad I could help. I used to do Revolutionary War reenacting so noticed the GR immediately, just knew it was probably George VI not the III... I'd try looking on ebay or somewhere & see what they're selling for. Not a fortune, but still a neat piece.
