I would like to conduct a little survey. to find out whether or not I have something extraordinary. I've seen several examples not only in my own collection yet some people for some reason have a hard time believing it. I will post mine and if you can could you please post yours as well.

Wow would you look at that! I'm going to have to take a very close look at all my points now. That's a trip! and very cool. I wonder where DionHurst01 found that little beauty- so well preserved. Nice piece there Gator. I would'a kept up w/ you but I found that I had a medical resistance to FB 8-) This is an interesting thread, I wonder what'll come of it... HH- Yakker

Those are awesome examples! Never found anything on my points.I have how ever found three clumps of what I believe to be asphaltum. These were found on a couple different sites.Has anyone else ever found any?It smells like creosote!........mjm

I saw one at the Mt Pleasant, Iowa show yesterday that had the complete pitch handle. It belonged to a Dr Savage and said it was found in a cave in California in the 1950s. Besides your points and the one I saw yesterday are the only ones I have ever seen.

Great artifacts, everybody. I'll be checking but don't remember seeing anything like that in my collection.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this thread! I always enjoy learning something new, artifacts with some history one the side. I've never heard of such a substance being used my area. I wonder if the use was dependent upon geographical means, i. e. Tar pits? At any rate thanks GatorBoy for raising the question and all who chimed in.

I know this is an old thread but I finally got at the three pieces of asphaltum that I've found at three different sites. It seems strange to me that all three are pretty much the same size and shape. This leads me to believe this is due to the way it was processed and used
