cypress, I swore to god I'd stay out of this further. But you might be on to something.

You explained it well on the other thread. You seem more knowlegable on shot puts than anyone else so I am just agreeing with you. :icon_thumright:

I coach baseball and the running events of track in high school when I have time. Have done this for almost 30 years. I've used and handled every shot put out there.

But I'm starting to think our brass ball might be the center detonator for a Plutonium bomb. You know, the place you put the fissionable material to crush into action by the other explosives around it. Something like that. Yah, that's the ticket.

I agree sure looks like a shot put ball but that dont mean it is one,and anyone can claim to know what it is but show me a 76 mm shot put ball. The most accurate measurement we have is a pic that looks 2.5 and a statement that claims (It's not much bigger than a baseball) a baseball is 2.9.
So even at 3 inches that would make it 76 millimeters.
Can anyone show a 76 millimeter shot put ball.?
I am not disagreeing with shot put I.D. but what about the size?

Boys, I was going to go back over to the "shot put" thread and ask if anyone understood we used to have a Junior Olympic training program in this country kinda like Little League for track. Up until 1978 you could get kids' shot puts for all age groups down to 2.5 pounds. They were brass and they had 2 threaded holes just like the big models.

Around 1978, javelin, discus and shot put were eliminated because of kids spearing other kids with javelins. I don't remember anyone getting hit with shot puts or discs but that might have happened too. So they stopped those events and the smaller shot puts and discus' and javelins are now no longer manufactured.

If you think I'm going back over to that thread and add this further information, you are crazy. Like the born-again, those boys got religion and they ain't gonna change their minds. They have a Junior Olympic shot put. A &$@%ing shot put! LOL!

(Up until 1978 you could get kids' shot puts for all age groups down to 2.5 pounds. )

Maybe if you had said that in the first place or showed any facts to back your opinion people would not question your I.D. Hell i would not have posted at all if i did not have questions about the size.

Old Town you made a great ID (pre-78 childrens shot put)with a great explanation. :icon_thumright: The problem was that you posted it late and on another thread lol.

I am not a moderator so I will leave it up to someone else to clean up this mess.

bigcypress: You've come back and been a sporting man. This says something good. No need to get bent out of shape over a detonator. LOL

No need to clean up any mess. This is standard forum banter, the best reason to read this crap. Some people are fun to read and some not so much. If I've offended I'm sorry but if you look at my posts I always try to inject some humor. I really don't think we should get excited over a stupid detonator.

What we should worry about is our country's stockpile of Plutonium bombs that are armed with misplaced shot puts. Now that's worrisome.

We have discussed shot puts here before we just never had one so small. That was the reason for some doubt. You may enjoy this old post. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,251347.0.html

I looked at that other post. Slot type plugs are Voyt and Wilson brands. We used this same slot-type in school in the 70s. It was for a quarter coin to open. Others use a spanner and some you have to beat around in a counter-clockwise manner with small hammer. This is an old Martin shot put and of a poor design if you ask me. The plugs on Martin's ALWAYS end up stuck fast.
