Do you only search for Silver?

I think our answers may lie in our Coin Hunting Budgets and time allotted for the addiction. I am one of those who hunts only for silver. I don't trust my edge-hunting skills so I drop all of the coins on a wood cutting board. The silver makes a unmistakable sound and I can watch Oprah while hunting. I am not serious about watching Oprah though. I don't search for proofs, so they make it back into the system for others to find. Happy Holidays "Photogame", Jim

Silver mainly, but also proofs, NIFC and occasionally look for no FG or any odd looking coin. Personally, I don't have the time to look at every coin for errors. Way too time consuming..........

Good luck & Happy Holidays.............

I look for anything collectible. Like others here my preference is for silver, NIFC's, proofs, and errors, but I have taken it a step further. I have a hard time letting go of the uncirculated halves. When I see an older clad half that looks like it just came out of a mint wrapper, I keep it. I am trying to get a roll of each date/mint mark and I doubt that it is do-able, but I will try.

Happy Hunting,

I search for silver, proofs, and mint set coins when searching for halves, as I still need a 1987P. When I find a 1987P though I might go purely to edge hunting like I've done with dimes and quarters. I know I must have missed some good dime/quarter errors, proofs, etc., but I don't have the time.

hello ,
So I was curious about other CRH's searchs. Do you only look for silver, edge huntiing? Look for proofs and NIFC. or are you a nut like me who does all that , plus look for errors. Found a few double dies and no FG. even a nice die clash. just curious. take care and enjoy the hunt

I am generally a nut like both of you, except I am a multi-denominational nut. I usually date search everything and make separate piles for the keepers (by type of keeper) as well as a separate pile for each date/mintmark that I look for errors on in that denomination and look for the errors after the primary search is over. I don't look for errors on every coin just the more valuable ones (that I am aware of) and the ones listed in the redbook.

My goal is a roll of each date/mintmark/variety for each denomination. Variety = things like small mintmark/large mintmark or small date/large date basically the intentional varieties that were produced by the mint (error coins do not count). I also would like to get at least 1 of each proof coin, 1 of each NIFC coin, and 1 of each of the error coins I search for. Oh, and since I find so many Canadian coins I am starting a roll collection for those too.

If I need a quick turnaround and don't have time to look for errors, I will edge search dimes and quarters now that I have full date rolls of all the common ones (with the exception of a couple of the newer state quarters from Philly). I always date search pennies, nickels, halves, and dollars.

I decided to fill my rolls with the first coins I find of a particular date/mintmark/variety and then as I find nicer coins replace the beat up ones unless I am keeping all of a particular coin (such as pre-1960 nickels, wheat pennies, or a particularly hard to find variety).

As most of you are probably already aware, I also tend to keep a lot of statistics on what I search, where I search, what I find, etc. :)
I keep the following lists (all in Excel):
1) Overall US/Canadian collection (tracks how many of each coin I have, how many I need for my books, how many I need for my rolls, as well as gives percent complete, etc.) <--way behind as I haven't integrated any pennies this year as well as some of my other finds. (hoping to catch up around XMas and start the new year fresh.)
2) Tracking list of how many of each I found in 2007 (only for the keepers).
3) Tracking list of which coins I found in 2007 (same format as #2, but max value is 1 so I can easily determine percent complete of a set, etc.)
4) Tracking list of what I found lifetime. (similar to #3, except that not limited to 2007).
5) Trip report (where I went, what I cashed in/bought, and what I found. Most of my personal stats come from this worksheet.
6) Tracking list for this forum in 2007 (results posted in a different thread).
7) Overall Non-Canadian foreign collection (very basic for now as I don't really spend much time on this).

And if that wasn't enough I started dabbling in paper money this year (decided to try to get one of each denom/series/fed reserve district). Mainly concentrating on $1's and $2's as they are easy to afford, but occasionally pull an older bigger bill to keep.

GMan,

What are you currency stats looking like for this year? I've been thinking of trying that as well.

Would certainly be easy to carry the waste to the bank.

I started looking at every single coin under a mag glass until finally I was going to be cross eyed every night. I can't wait to stop at a light so I can open a roll on the way home. In the car while driving I only look at edges and drop them in a bag then I look at each and every single one when I get home. I gave up on looking at my pennies I will save them for another time they are to hard to see. I think I need a better light for them. Gman are you 325 Ike's all silver?

Thanks

Nope, haven't found a single silver Ike yet. Just finding Ikes at all is difficult around here.

I mainly search pennies, nickels and dimes. The big reason I don't do anything bigger is because of the money situation. Being a college student, I don't have a lot of cash on hand at any given time. I do look for silver and have found a limited amount, just look at my signature. I just do this for fun. If I come across silver, that's great, but its not the sole reason I do this.

I am sure you know that some of the 74 and 77 were unintenionally made in silver as well as some of the bicentennials. What different ways do you use to determine if they are silver or not? Is there a better way than just looking at the edge or using the old bar napkin trick?

Thanks
Cat

You will definitely have to try this out. Take a nickel clad and a silver coin and lay them on the table then lay a paper towel over them. The silver will pick up the light and reflect it back at you but the nickle will not. So you can see the silver coin though the paper towel as it will show up as white you will not easily see the nickel coin. Go try it and let me know what you think.

Thanks
Cat

I search for silver, proofs, and some listed error coins like the 74D DD and 82,83,90 no FG, and any coin after 2001. I use a big lighted magnifying glass and do 2 boxes in less than an hour. I love CRH ;D

Don't really search them too hard. Occasionally I'll remember to ask when I am cashing in if the teller has any old bills and sometimes I get lucky, but not often. Once and awhile I will buy $100-$200 worth of $1's to search. In that I will find 1 or 2 older than 1995 and maybe a star note or two and that's about it. I think I have found one radar note as well.
