I found this thing at a site that goes back
to the early 1800's. It seems to be brass,
but it set my MD off like an aluminum can?

It has a nice red patina,

Is this a Colt? It was found at the same site
and it seems to measure 44 cal,

Hay, would this hurt if it was cocked?

Ever seen one of these. I found it there too.
It looks kind of like a curtain rod end. It seems
to be brass, or brass and copper on the bulb part,

It has about a 5/16th inch, threaded hole in
it,

The trap is not old - it's a stop-loss.

Hay Tim,

If it ain't old, somebody should tell all those people buying
antique traps on eBay that they got it all wrong,

Here is two antique traps for sell right now,

So, why is theirs old, and mine is new?

Could you please explain?

The problem with these especially some of the Victor traps is that they haven't changed in many years. You can still buy them in hunting & fishing stores and they look the same basically as the ones that were made many years ago. There's a way for you to make a few bucks.. Buy some from the local gun shop, leave them outside for a few months maybe in a bucket of salt water to speed up the rusting process, and sell them on Ebay as "antiques"

None of those traps with the "hump" to hold the pan are really old. The value comes from rarity and condition.

As for ethics... well...

humans have removed so many items from nature's balance, sometimes management is required. IMHO, beavers are a problem. They are unlicensed hydraulic engineers, and they won't pay their fines. Large herd animals can be managed by hunting. Beavers are hard to hunt under water.

I get the impression that your first item has gone through some extreme heat and wondering if it's some kind of mould holder from a blacksmiths/Foundry ?

I don't think brass would be a good material for a
mold holder.

I think it just looks that way because it is hand made
and has a red patina.

It is unscratched and not bent. It's thickness is inconsistent.
It appears to be old and hand made.

I have seen one of these things somewhere, but, I just can
not place where.

Thanks for helping,

Could it have been a training project for a blacksmith's apprentice.

"You have learned well, young apprentice. As a test, please create for me a small brass ring and attach a hoop to it. I will be looking for good quality joints." :D

Other than that, can't figure out a practical use for such a small object other than a miniature brand, or very crude honking large ring, stirrups for a model horse? :tongue3:

I know where you are coming from Charlie and my sentiments exactly. I grew up hunting and fishing and trapping and raising livestock for food and I never had one animal carry on a conversation with me. Well, I had an old dog that was a good listener I have to admit but we didn't eat him. Monty

That ball looks like a trailer hitch bvall to me with the threaded bolt removed from the bottom. Monty

Could the top item possibly be part of a vintage pipe hanger/strap?

Best,

To Put my two cents in: those are victor onieda jump traps they grab up higher on the animals leg. Normally these keep the animal from breaking their legs and from getting away. They were made in the 60's I believe. I trapped when I was in grade school and a little when I was in highschool.

SS

No, they still do lots of cruel things to animals in this country. Of course they do in other countries as well but still, WE should know better.

I was detectin some years back...maybe 25 years ago, and my daughter that was 5 was with me and found one of those leg traps in a nearby creek. I was soo ticked off. She had picked it up by the chain and showed me it. I can't imagine what might have happened had she not seen it and stepped in it. They should have been outlawed years ago.
