What is the item under the plate in the 3rd picture, looks to be a book clasp?

That one is in question, thanks for bringing it up. It is hinged but made of fairly heavy brass. My first thought was perhaps a musket patchbox hinge since we found so many gun parts.

Normally, if a book clasp (which it looks very similar to), it would be circa 1600s. However, it is a little different from those ones. I still think it could be a later version, did they have leather bound log books? or similar?

Even though it was a civil war artillery fort & camp, there were some earlier finds made. I dug a tosted 1/2 reale. And saw many early civilian type buttons. So its likely there was an early dwelling there too.

Thats what I'm trying to unpick, is it earlier than the other finds pictured. A better picture will help, both sides please?

Here are some better pics. I sized it in metric to make it easier. Upon closer inspection there does appear to be a period break on the closeup These are in no order

Steve Thanks. Yes we made it a point! Last year me and the crew found this spot on the last day. This is a pic of a case from last spring on the same spotto all dug on day 3...

OK, not a book clasp. Looks more for wood. The wide end has a broken piece missing

Yes. I thought it was mite heavy to clasp a book. What about a patch box cover in a musket stock?

Guess it could be just a hinge for a small box.
