I was heading out to check out a few cellar holes in the Hampstead, NH Conservation area yesterday. I wandered the trail system aimlessly as I do to quickly learn the trails. I was hoping to spend a little time detecting the area, but when I came across the cellar holes, I was horrified at what I saw. The walls were dug out by a careless detectorist who had no concern for preserving the historic site. Dug the shoulder of the hole, left gaping holes. The cart road was pocked with unfilled holes. Cast iron "junk" and relics just tossed to the side like it didnt have value. Maybe it wasnt gold, silver or copper, but PLEASE, whoever you are, in the Hampstead area, take great care of our sites. No matter how deep into the woods you were, you were only feet from a main trail. You made a beautiful area ugly. This kind of practice will shut down the hobby.
