I found this at an old home site dating to the early 1800's. I thought it was a flat button at first, but there is no shank... or a spot where one once was. On the top rim it appears that something was attached to it at one point. Its about the thickness of a flat button and a little smaller in width than the quarter. Any idea what this is from or what the numbers mean?

I have seen them solid like this but most have holes. A miners check token.....maybe.

Good idea! However, I found it in Northern VA and we don't have any mines around here. I have a check tag from Alaska that does have a hole and I've never seen any that don't have a hole.

I guess there could have been a loop at the top. Possibly a livestock tag? Never seen one quite like that. The number seems kinda high for livestock.

Here are two cattle tags I found years ago at a different location. The item in question, with the "3322", was also found by a house dating to the early 1800's, on a farm dating to the 1700's! Maybe its a chicken ID tag! haha. I also thought it might be a type of utility pole tag... but without a hole in it, I really am clueless on what it could be.

You say it might have had something attached to the top……Since it was found in Northern Virginia; it might also be an old bale tag for cotton or tobacco.

Thanks a ton for all the ideas!

I googled around and found similar ones, but nothing that totally matched it.

It must be some tag that's a cross of this

that was attached with something like this

I'm going to close it since it sounds like its some bale, livestock, tool, or luggage tag that is probably pretty generic.

Thank you all.

What you found isn't a tag, it's a token. There is debate on exactly what the numbers meant but what I have heard is they are railroad tokens. The number could have been for a specific depot, but it's not sure. The one I dug was a "good for" but it had a number like yours on the other side.
