'DING, DING' TRAM BUTTON,A PAPER,MATCH BOX HOLDER ARE RELATED.

Hi all,It rained all day and i,m not unhappy as we need the rain.So today i found out that i had three relics from three different locations are connected.some time a go a got some old news papers from a country town called Inglewood, at disused shop. The newspaper was called The Inglewood Times and stopped printing in 1927.I was read threw a 1917 edition and read this old add about a Whitelock @ Carter Tailors.I remembered this match box holder that had the same name on it.The match box holder was found under a tree up the road from my house.Sure it did indeed match, to the add. This just gets better in June last year i found a 1921 Tram Driver"s button and i asked a local historian about it.I got a 2 hour rundown about the Bendigo Tramways and its whole history and when told me who made the uniforms for the tramsways. The button is a Stokes and Sons button. The uniform maker was Whitelock & Carter. All seem a bit hard to believe but these pics and the link should totaly amaze you. This just the start because the Long Gully area where the button has a well recorded history and Max Ellis told be there was only one tram driver living in the area .His Name was G.W Giles. Here,s a link about the the Bendigo Tramways which matches to the button, followed by the pics.I will add more pic and next part of the story which is totally mind blowing. In 1925 Giles purchased a block of land on Eaglehawk road and what happened on this block in 1923 .Tell more tomorrow.

Re: 'DING, DING' TRAM BUTTON,A PAPER,MATCH BOX HOLDER ARE RELATED.

Hi All,Harriet Adams was my great grandmother and she married Horace Mansfeild. who was the 3 child of Ethel Mansfeild.Sure right i,m directly related. This tragedy was known to the family but was not mention for over 50 years. The location of the british @american shaft was also never mention.Memebers of the family alawys told us a different location. They had their reasons .Just before the passing of Great aunty Emmly Lee ,she told me whole story and i have since by huge pile of paper cutting have nailed this one. There is actually the 3 mine shaft on the block and over time i have found out the names of the mines .The British Chum and Handy Andy.

The British @American mine was first dug in 1878 and located on the Chum Quart Reef. The Hotel over the road was named first and the mine after it.By mine depth standard this mine was shallow {400 feet} and was only mined for a few years.

You're one smart cookie, tincanny! This is really interesting stuff. 8)

Questions for you.....Are there still open mine shafts in Austrailia? How do they close them up? Have there been any recent incidents of people falling into mine shafts? ??? Just curious.

Re: 'DING, DING' TRAM BUTTON,A PAPER,MATCH BOX HOLDER ARE RELATED.

hi lisa At the inquest into the death of Ida Mansfield,it was highly recommed that mine sites where to be cleaned up and shafts capped or filled in.In late 1923 Victoria Government passed laws to clean up the mine sites and in some country areas yes there some open mines still to this day.

Great Job Tin, as always! Bendigo has a lot of history & mysteries for you to uncover, we enjoy hearing about them as you dig up the facts & relics of the past! That 1917 newspaper must be full of cool info, I love reading through old stuff like that! We are very much looking forward to future installments of your story..............your Bendigo history lesson! :)
