I was detecting under permit today on a 390 acre site managed by our local Metroparks, and specifically looking for iron targets with my Nox 800. Part of this site was used to quarry Berea sandstone used in local building foundations in the 1800’s, including the historic Kirtland Temple (Mormons) completed in 1836, so there’s some history to the site and surrounding area.
I found a brass reins guide, a hand forged tapered fastener of some sort (the head is not perfectly square), and what appears to me to be a splitting wedge that must have come from a machine of some sort, based on the opposing grooves where it broke. I covered the area, but was unable to find the rest of tool. It’s only 2-1/4” wide, and was heavily encrusted in rust before I got it to this point.
Anyone have an idea what this is?
