Since I retired from the my construction business, I have taken up my second job that I have been doing for years.
I do gravestone restoration, and prior to Memorial Day I went to a local church cemetery that has been neglected over the years.
Of the twenty three military markers and stone, there were 16 that needed to be re-set and one that was broken and needed to be repaired.
I did this for no pay. While I was working, someone stopped to pay their respect and asked if I would be willing to find some old stones in an abandoned cemetery. First I had to clear a bunch of brush and trees. Today I started probing and digging in an area where some old stone bases were scattered.
These are my finds for the day.

Creskol, That's so wonderful that youd take up the time and effort to devote yourself to this work your doing. Thank you for that.

The oldest picture of a grave can find of any of my direct ancestors on the find a grave site is that of my 4th great grandmother Rhoda Goble Brandenburg, b. 1788 d. 1857 Her headstone isn't looking so good now after being in the elements now for 165 years.

Cool old stone! It looks like it could benefit from some TLC (tender loving care). Thanks for sharing that oldie but goodie!

Nice going on your part. Thanks for taking time and cleaning up area. Can you post pictures after it is cleaned up?

Creskol what is the best way to clean up old cemetery stones with out damaging them ?

You know after I was layed off at a mine I was at back in 1983 I contacted a school in Vermont that taught you the skills of engraving headstones. I was thinking that might be enjoyable work and something that would retain employment being connected to well not so much the ups and downs of the economy, but instead the comings and goings of each and every one of us. But life took me down a different path, which has maintained employment quite well being basically a peddler.

Tamrock will you tell us how to clean of head stones and what we should use ?

Thank you Creskol !! I will give it a try :)

That headstone looks amazing! What awesome work you folks are doing- preserving these cemeteries.
What part of RI are you in? I have family near Matunuck. I want to do some swingin' on their property soon!
Thanks, jcono! I am in northern RI. I wish you happy hunting in Matunuk! It should be a great area to hunt!

An update on the jigsaw puzzle gravestone: I poured a new slotted base for it on Friday and went back today to set the stone in the slot and seal around the edges with stone setting compound. Aside from sewing a little grass seed, the project is complete. It ain't perfect, but it is a lot better than it was.
