Diggin' holes

After work today, yes I worked half a day, I stopped by a co-worker's home which was built in 1882. I got dig permission and decided to wait 'til after this weekend's expected precip to dig. While I was there I grabbed the probes and looked for the "privy". I walked to the back of the lot by the alley on the "blind side"(cant see from the street) of the house. I then looked for any obvious low spots. Bam!! a slight rectangular depression a couple feet from me. I stuck the 4 foot probe in the middle and hit glass at 3 feet. I then stuck the probe in at a 45 degree angle and hit a wall. I jabbed the suspected wall hard a couple times and pulled the probe out to see rock dust on the probe tip. I repeated this until all 4 walls were detected and marked off. I now have a rectangular privy with its tossed in non-combustible trash waiting for me to dig. I'm chomping at the bit. I'll detect there too!!

Very cool. Good luck digging...hope you find some awesome bottles.

Re: Diggin' holes

Dayton - keep us updated. Privy's are my next adventure into this wonderful realm of treasure hunting. I saw a show that Becky Worley did on "Best Places to Find Cash and Treasure" on bottle hunting and hunting in old privy's. Good luck with this one, and sounds like you will be finding bottles since you hit glass with the probe.

HH and Digging.

Re: Diggin' holes

What sort of probes are you using?

Are they just 4' rounded metal rods?

Re: Diggin' holes

I use old trunk rods from full size gm cars of the 70's-80's. They end up about four feet long and I have one probe with two welded together, it's at least 8 feet. I get them at the junkyards for 5 or 10 bucks. I have someone weld a T-handle on top made from 2" steel pipe and weld a larger diameter ball bearing on the tip. They are made of spring steel and when you hit glass, you'll here a "tink" sound. I have to wait 'til next weekend for my digging partner to dig this stone-liner. I'm jonesing for it, but maybe I'll go detect their today if the weather cooperates.

Re: Diggin' holes

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. If you want to find old bottles, you don't want to dig a standing outhouse. Too new!!! If you're in the city and the home dates to the 1800's, look for another pit. If it's country, they usually dug shallow pits and threw their trash down a bank or up in the woods.

I 'm watching for the update.
