Diggin History #12 - 6/22/08 Lake Delton Hunt

Bomber & Murph & I went up to Lake Delton in Wisconsin on Saturday and left Sunday. We wanted to see the damage
that the draining lake had done. We also planned to get in some metal detecting while we were there. Once we got
there we were blown away at the damage. We got a room just feet from the lake; it looked like a bomb went off. All
that was left was dried and cracking mud. We hunted for a couple of hours then called it quits, finding mostly lead
fishing weights, and metal scrap.

Talking to the locals, they said the lake drained in about 2 hours!!! They also pointed us to where they think the most
coins would be. We didn't find much, but the trip was definitely worth it. My thoughts and prayers go out to the whole
town; on the news they said that the $1 billion tourism industry is gone. The locals are hoping that the lake will be
repaired and back to normal by next year. God I hope so...

Geesh, those dang Good Luck Duck Tokens are everywhere. They used to show up more than the cheesy rats. You know, you guys do kinda look like cheeseheads, was that a Packer Backer mudslide? Did anyone call you a bunch of coin-thirsty FIBs?

Glad you guys made it over there. Wow, that damage looks really bad. I'm also quite surprised that the lake was as shallow as it was. Doesn't look like the lakebed is very concave. I'm sure the trip was worth it.

Though, what happened to the video??

Good video. I was thinking about heading up there next week with my brother. Hopefully the lake bed will dry a bit more by then. It's worse than I thought up there.

Thanks for sharing Fiend! I drove through the Dells on the way back from our fathers day dads and lads fishing trip and was very saddened by what we saw. It did seem like detecting would be good. I was surprised you didn't find any rings! I bet it was a very good experience anyway.

OK, now the video works for me. Several things come to mind after seeing this:

1. The absence of any underwater structure/vegetation is mindboggling. This was simply a large, flat lake without anything substantial for the fish to establish territories and spawn in. This is a prime example of a biological wasteland.

2. I am not aware of the lake's origins, but I am wondering if it was manmade. It seems so unnaturally shallow.

3. The most exciting thing to see in Wisconsin is a giant mudhole, and

4. That banjo music that introduces and ends each of your treasure hunting episodes seems so much more fitting here. Something about Wisconsin...
