Hello all fellow DIGGERS! I found this thread inspired by the show diggers, and wanting to get into the hobby.

Any how, I love all the stories and advice for the new guys on the block. This site has awesomeness every where!

I am waiting for my tax return to buy my new equipment...I'm thinking of the AT Pro, and pointer as that is what seems to be a popular brand on the threads and the show.

Can't wait to use the terms like "nectar", "roundness in the hole" and dance around and tackle bushes when I find cool things:)

Ready to strike it big time so I can retire with my chest of pirate gold! As soon as I get my first fruit from the nectar of the ground, I will post some pics!

I just brought up the fishing show because Diggers may be paying NatGeo to air the show.

True dat! Didin't think about it.I am surprised that since the Diggers guys use AT pros, Garrett doesn't run commercials during their show unless commercial slots are too expensive on the Nat Geo channel.
I just wish that Spike would drop Rick Savage(SALVAGE). That clown is going to ruin anyone's chance of hunting personal property. They look more like the modern day Addams family, at least the wife certainly does:o

I second that question

I think it would be cool if someone here would interview the guys from the Diggers show. Maybe put it on YouTube?

What about inviting them to where we live for a possible cameo on Nat Geo? Highly unlikely I know but if I could line up a good historical site that has been normally off limits to hunt, I would invite them.

They did do a show (whiskey rebellion episode) in Washington County PA and they filmed the end of the show at the Bradford house in Washington PA. I live about 10 miles from Washington.

Word to the wise Picker; you probably don't want to involve the Archies in any of your discoveries as they will shut you down. Enjoy and welcome to the sport.
I am definitely here in the hobby cause of the show, and it has inspired me to join a hobby!

I think the show is fun and responsible. They work with an archeologist and get permission to dig and leave no trace of their holes.

Keeping that all in mind, they still have a lot of fun...silly yes, but that's TV! A couple of Grumpy guys digging up stuff might not have inspired me, or been entertaining.

Looking forward to getting started....hopefully the Nectar Gods will smile down on me and give me some roundness in the hole....I've already been warned not to tackle the nearest tree....just a discreet dance.

The heck with your AT Pro, Digger Show, etc. - WHY in the world did you pick the name Nose Picker?

Nectar in the Hole - thought "nose picker" was a good fine name for a digger! :)

I am enjoying hearing from all - I can tell you are all very passionate about the hobby...even the grumpy ones :)

Practicing my bush tackling dance moves discreetly in my head right now!

Pick you're nose all you want to, however I've got $100 that says the only thing you'll find
in there is boogers!

FWIW, I also like the excitement that the guys show, BUT, I can't imagine anyone
running off, jumping over crap, falling down and in general just acting like a fool. Their "lingo" makes
me wanna barf every time I hear them spouting off, and as said, they dig nasty looking plugs and
holes in folks yards that COULD be a hellofa lot neater and cleaner.

Detecting can be about as much fun as you can have with your pants on, no doubt, but
those two have taken a very juvenile approach to how they express themselves.

Nose Picker: I do hope you know that we're all just kidding with you, as
some of us have odd handles too..lol

We have a good time here (within boundaries, of course) and the guys/gals
ribbing you a little over that handle were just "initiating you into the fold". :occasion14:

No worries - I am having fun reading all the posts.....no one holds back here.

Can you say dramatized for tv? I agree that it has probably contributed to a recent large influx of used lightly used detectors on the market, and gives people not in the know some unfair assumptions of the hobby, by the sounds of it though everyone in this thread watches the show, I watch to see off limits historical ground be hunted as I will likely never be able to do so, and tune out all the garbage as I watch the show in discrim mode lol.

I've tried watching the show. I made it all the way through one episode. After that, I can't even leave it playing in the background while I'm working. As soon as I hear the lingo, I have to mute it. It's good that a few people will get into detecting because of a silly show, but the vast majority who try aren't going to stick with it. Here are a few general principles to consider.

1) If you get into this for the money, you're crazy. Except for a few great, rare discoveries, detecting tends to cost more than it returns.

2) You have to do it for the pull tabs. A man who digs for treasure will give up quickly. If you dig just to grow your pull tab collection, then you will be happily digging for years. (i.e. zen-detecting).

3) Most people aren't going to be familiar with what detectorists do and many are even offended at detectorists on sight because of their own misunderstandings (thanks a lot, archaeological community).

It's tempting to say that maybe shows like "Diggers" could help somewhat with #3, but I don't think they do. It seems that they just exchange one set of falsehoods for another. It's true that the show wouldn't get such high ratings if it wasn't so ADHD-ATTENTION-GRABBING-LINGO-BUZZWORD-HAPPYDANCE, but maybe that's just the cost of presenting the truth (you don't get to distort it). I would much rather have 30 minutes of boring facts than a theatreful of dancing lies/propaganda.
