Didn't they drop any coins?!

I spent the day recovering from the disappointment of yesterday's election by going out to the woods and a cellar hole I've been searching for a couple years. We had temps near 70 today; it was nice to be out in the warm sunshine, working my butt off for hours for a few minutes of detecting. This foundation is so old that there are lots of small trees to be removed if one wishes to actually search the ground around it. There are also dozens, if not scores or hundreds, of foundation rocks scattered about. They sap lots of energy, but have to be moved too. The site is also a good hike from civilization, so it was a physical day to say the least. I've spent probably 20 hours at this site, clearing the ground so I could search and then actually searching. So far, I don't have a single coin to show for the effort! I managed an old brass wedding ring last year, and a musketball, but the most common finds are old rusty nails. Today, I managed this ornate item, whatever it is. It's heavy for its size, probably brass, and might have been a knocker or handle to a piece of furniture. These are only guesses. I'm convinced that there are old coins about; I just have to work to find them. So far, DrDetector has been at the site; I'm waiting to see if he has the courage to go back! Kiros32 has been invited as well; maybe we'll see what he thinks. This old place has a house and barn foundation at least, probably an outhouse foundation and there should be a well and dump somewhere within reach too. Here's a picture of today's single find :'(.

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

My buddy Stormfighter (Dan) and I are hunting a spot just like yours. We've spent the last 3 Sundays and not one coin in this area. We have found a lot of buttons, shotgun shells, I found a nice militia plate and suspender buckle but no coins. This is our first relic site, we're digging it all too. Puzzling sometimes. Good Luck at the spot.

You have to keep the faith man. The hard work is done. Step back and take a look at the scene figure your starting point and grid, grid, grid.
It it gets too boring in grid use a marker system to save one search while you start a second grid. I took two detectors out and when I got sick
of one, I switched to the other. Just about the time you give up hope it will pay off.

Keep at it, Don

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

i've been hunting a site , too that could be the one you've described. so old that my grandparents, who would be in ther late 80's if alive don't remember any sign of buildings except for foundation stones. very isolated, in the woods, away from any "civilization." we found an area of what i would say is "fill" with broken crocks, broken china, all sorts of thick-glassed bottles af various shapes and sizes. it was below the spring which has beautiful cut stones around it. the only thing of any value at all found with the detector was a shoe buckle. i have searched for many hours with a classic ID and a dfx with no coins. i mentioned this in a recent post, just found this weekend canning-jar lids and a plow blade. i was thinking like you: didn't they ever drop anything or lose a button? i've about given up, and understand your bewilderment. hope to see your post of a coin someday. good luck!!

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

I'm searching the same type of site. I find mostly square nails, but after several two or three hour days I finally found an 1893 Indian Head. So now I'm hoping they lost more. So far the nails have been about 4 inches and the coin was about 7 inches, the depth of my digger blade anyhow. I think they really didn't have very many coins to loose.

Since this appears to have been a farm, I assume there was some business transacted. For example, a bushel of apples for a lovely Seated half, or eggs, or something. I don't expect to find much, but there has to be something! If I find anything, it may also give me an idea where a clothesline once ran. I assume it would be where the southern and western sun landed the most. Your imagination runs wild at a place like this.

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

Keep hunting something will be found. Good luck. :coffee2:

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

Keep on pluggin' HD. You will pop out a sweet coin there. I can feel it

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

Take your time and don't get discouraged.

Try to find the path from the house / barn to the outhouse, hitching post, etc...
Check the garden areas real good if you can figure out where it was. Normally
it was able to be viewed from the kitchen window so the Mrs. could keep an eye
on the stash.

It's still out there!

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

I know you put alot of time and effort in this place but you have to face reality sooner or later. Maybe just like your title suggests, maybe the coins are not there or are unreachable. There are plenty of spots that do have the goodies and you need to find them and reap the rewards. Here's wishing you all the luck in the world for your endeavors. :occasion14:

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

Henry,

Remember my "foundation site?" You just described it perfectly...a real pain in the butt. Give me a shout one weekend and I will come out and help you clear the site.

And the answer to your question is yes, they did drop coins :tongue3:

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

Halfdime,
You have me thinking, (no matter what my wife may say)
I had just posted that I had been skunked for the first time this fall at the old fairgrounds.
Until I read your post it didn't hit me. This was my first post after the election!
Hmmm, is it bad karma? Or a new "old coin" tax?
LOL

Can we find a way to at very least blame this on someone else?

Have a great day.

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

Keep at it Halfdime,

I bet there are coins there. Most likely they are very deep. All the foundations I have hit around here the coppers where 8 to 10 inches deep. I hit a cellar hole yesterday and was finding flat buttons way past the 8 inch mark. Very faint chirps just let them come through.

I love that type of hunting. Old untouched sites out in the P.a woods. Soil is really nice at these places. It goes down atleast 12 inches before it hits clay. Finds get really deep at these sites. Clean the place up some and you may get a few keepers. Did it ever pass your mind that maybe a hunter over the yrs found the site and hit it hard already.

Re: Didn't they drop any coins?!

I hate to say it but if you've been hunting a homesite for more than one day and not found any coins there's only two possible answer to that.

1. Someone else has already hunted the site and cherry picked the site. However if you feel this is highly unlikely then there's only one other possible answer as to how that has happened.

2. you've stumbled upon a pre-socialist spread the wealth democrat's house. ! ;D

I've considered that someone else may have hunted it, but there is so much overgrowth that it's unlikely. There's no way, even if it was cherrypicked, that someone was able to do a thorough job. This spot could take years to clean out, but I don't know if I'll have that kind of time; there are rumors of a Wal-Mart coming, and I heard heavy equipment working in the woods not too far away yesterday. I could always focus on outhouse areas and dig them!
