What's up everyone. A friend of mine just bought a dfx a few weeks ago and wanted me to show him how to use it. He picked me and my 2 boys up and we headed out. He took us to a old park. I actually lived behind it years ago and never really gave it to much thought. It's the type of park that is hidden.

When I got there I knew for sure it was from the 1800's. I showed him a few quick tips and we went on our way. It was slow at first and for most of the day. This is another hunted out park. I took the 1400 today in hopes that the site didn't have alot of trash. It was moderate and I was able to still separate.

The first old item found was a really nice 1898 barber dime on the surface. It had a little mud on it and I then knew they didn't get it all. I dug a few wheat's here and there. I then found a small old ring. I then got a really strong signal in the high 80's at 8.5 inches deep. I really love this coil. It reads targets loud at those depths. I dug down under a root and found 2 mercs in the same hole. I was happy with 3 silvers to show for. We were there for about 2.5 hrs.

By the time I met up with my friend he was so frustrated with the dfx he was ready to throw it over a mountain. I told him to chill out this unit takes alot of time to learn. Silver coins don't just jump in your pouch with a dfx. I feal really lucky to have mastered a awesome unit because now I can find things anywhere with that edge.

This unit isn't for the impatient. But if you learn it well it is a great detector. He calmed down showed me his finds and I told him that it was pretty good. He had no old coins one nice old button and some clad. It takes a long time to learn this unit.

I now have a new spot to detect. There is a ton of area and I expect some more good finds from this place. This hobby is all about patients and persistence and a good set of ears couldn't hurt.

I took a pic for you all to show you that my silver is dirty and looks bad also when it comes out.

Thanks for looking

HH Jeremy

What you say about the dfx is true. It takes a while but then it clicks. Nate is doing well with it. I just got a Minelab Quattro that I'm using. He is finding about twice as much as I am although I am one up on him in the silver department. ;)

When you say 8.5"... is that what you pinpoint at? Wow. Did you ever get that with the stock coin?

Also, from the finds you guys get I'm suprised there are any "hunted out" places by you. You ever see anyone hunting the places you hunt?

That Barber dime looks sweet.

Tell your friend to hang in there, it gets easier. But it does take awhile. I have had mine for two years and I am stll learning it, but I do find my share of silver and rings. The DFX loves rings. I am going to start learning the Explorer II in the spring and I hope it will allow me to switch back and forth between the two, but I think the DFX will always be number one.

I bought my DFX in November...I typically keep it on either the coins or coins/jewelry preset. Is there a good chance that im missing nice finds using it on the presets only. Thanks.

Nice finds by the way..."liberty" stands out pretty nice on the Barber.

Thanks everyone. Most of the spots we hunt are in the open and are hunted hard. I have only seen a few detectorist over the years at some of these spots. There are barely no quarters though so you know someone every now and then sweeps it over.

I have found dimes 8 inches deep with the stock coil. The thing is though it never said 8 inches it would say 5 and be 8 inches deep. With the 1400 it will say 8 inches ring louder and actually be 8 inches deep.

Your missing some Daniel. The presets are to weak for me. Unless you juice them up some. I like the eeprom high pro with a few of my own tweaking. It is one powerful stable program. I got it from a guy who has been using white's for over 40yrs. I now change it up alot and get alot out of it.

Being a newbie to this unit I would stay on the preset programs for a year. In a year you'll be familiar enough with it to start tweaking it. I have been using this machine for 4 or 5 years now. I have spent alot of time on this unit. And I have found enough treasure to buy 10 more of them. I'll never swing anything else but a white's top of the line.

I can't teach patients. It's not the unit. He was already talking like he got a bad one from the factory. He also wanted me to load him a high performance program when he doesn't even know the v.d.i scale. He won't take my advice he just wants to dig silver. My best advice is to dig everything and understand what the detector is telling you. Once you master that then you can start to find stuff.

He'll get better. He's just frustrated because we hunted a handful of times all at the same spots and he didn't get one keeper on the year. The funny thing is I will have ten old coins in my hand after the hunt and we are hunting the same area. It's all practice and patients.

Thanks again Jer

Hey Daniel in NC, I would answer your question with a big yes. After you develop a little confidence in the machine load the EEPROM Deep silver program. This is a good program that will get you "deeper". Don't try it initially in a trashy area. There is a good site for DFX users : www.dfxonly.com This site has a lot of info and tips. I think this site really helped out learning curve. One other tip - I like to load the Jewelry/Beach program and then boost the preamp gain to 3 or 4. For my conditions this seems to work well - gives some added sensitivity and has the tone id which I perfer.

Jer, Thanks for the depth explaination. I might have to get one of those 1400 coils.

"just wants to dig silver" lol ... yeah that's because he see's what you are finding. Maybe you should plant something for him. ;) It's funny how you become more patient once you find something good.

Thanks...it would be interesting in a year to see what I can dig up at some of the same spots.

Jeremy,

Great finds! What did you photograph them on? Black cloth?

David

Thanks guys. Bob I like the 1400 alot. It's good but a pricey coil. I like the quick coverage with it. You can find a miss quick with this coil. It's better in bad soils and finds coins at better depths. You can test a area quickly with this coil to. It's good for no trash to moderate trash area's. It's good in the woods and you can get it tight up against things. It's proven to me that it can find treasure and that's what my main thing was.

You'll get more Daniel as you learn. I have found some awesome items that read in the negatives up to plus 10 on the unit. Use it as much as you can. I have alot of spots built up to were I figured I could now get another coil just to go over those areas again as I am finding new spots at the same time to greater my chances of finding treasure.

Besdies finds I have alot of fun detecting. It's something I just like doing alot. Finding and tracing old history is alot of fun that never gets old.

David I got a new scanner again that I am trying to master. It's a really good one. It's a HP scanjet automatic document feeder . It scans in like 7 seconds. You can get it to go up to 2400 DPI. I found that there was a ton of glare with the lid closed. So what I did was I opened the lid up in the dark at night perferably and I then got that nice black background. I also tried it with the lid shut and something black like a piece of foam and it turned out good that way to.

I don't know if it works on all scanners or this one is just set up to work this way but I thought it looked pretty good. I'm gonna keep working with this scanner because it has alot of software with it that I haven't mastered yet.

Nice hunt, Jer.

That's funny you should mention the 1400 coil. I was asking my Whites dealer about it today and he was telling me that I would not get more depth with it. I would just be able to hunt an area faster. He always talks to me like I don't know anything. Little does he know, I'm hanging out here and learning tons!

Is there much of a weight difference between your old coil and your new one?

Thanks for the info, Jer.

Thanks everyone. Haupin the coil is heavier and I do tend to feal the weight a few hrs later. The dealers some of them don't barely know anything about the hobby. Not knocking your guy everyone has there own opinion. Like I said before I'm not paid buy whites so I'm not trying to pitch this coil.

I am a professional treasure hunter amd know the in's and out's. I could probably write books as well as jeff foster and the others who have done so. My cup of tea is filling my pouch to the max after a hunt. I'm not telling everyone to go out and get a 1400. My stock coil would go almost as deep as this one. Only problem is deep targets ring in very low. This coil reads them louder and gives you a better chance of not walking over it.

Give me any coil I'll find treasure with it. Knowing the unit in and out has given me that edge. There's not enough people who own these coils to accurately judge them. You either have to take a gamble or take someone's word for it.

Nowadays I want every extra edge I can have. These coils put down a totally different pattern than the stock does.

Take care all

HH Jer

I love that Barber!!! I haven't found one yet. Hope you will have several new finds to show us soon!

Beautiful finds Jeremy!
