I have been detecting with the DFX for about a year now on and off. When detecting and pinpointing the deepest I get is 5". Is this normal? I have been living in Florida until about a month ago. Now I am in VA and have been out the past 3 days just in my neighborhood. I have been detecting the grass between the sidewalks and the street. I found a 1927 Mercury dime and a few wheats but most of the things I am finding are copper pennies. It is nice to be able to find something everytime I go out but is there a reason I am only reading 5".

I don't know any special programs or anything like that. I turn the machine on and then detect. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Lori

Oh yeah in about a month I will be moving to Western West Virginia. Iza gunna be a country gal!!!

Lori, Your DFX is set up as a pretty basic detector right out of the box. What you need to do is to read your manual and learn how to tune your detector for the different types of things you are looking for and the type of soil you are detecting in. The DFX will go deeper just by turning your gain up 1 or 2 notches. You can do this as long as the machine remains stable. I have had mine for over a year and feel like I am just scratching the surface as far as learning it. There is a website called DFX only and some of the most knowledgable DFX users in the world use this site. There are also a lot of people here that will help point you in the right direction. You own one of the best detectors on the market, stick with it!

Lori: I have been using my DFX for about alittle over one month. I have
studied alot, "Jeff Foster's Book", "Digging Deeper With The DFX". Great
book and It Will Help You Alot.

I have been running strickly in the preprogrammed mode: Jewelry/Beach.
In that mode the "tone ID and VCO" automatically turns on. Much
better than the "Jewelry/Coin" mode. Works terrific.

I have found targets as deep as 7". Found a "1865 two cent piece"
yesterday out at Warsaw, Missouri. Old civil war site. I posted it in
"Today's Finds" last night.

I am really happy in that mode. I find everything. In the past two and
one half weeks in one park, I have found over 130 coins, and (3) rings.
"warsawdaddy" can validate that. I have not even bothered to run the
DFX in any other mode or configuration.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.
Keep practicing and HUNT HUNT HUNT!!

Good Luck, blklab (Doug)

Hello there. It will show the depth of the target, if you don't get deeper either your program does not permit you to go deeper or there are few deeper targets.

I will send ya a few programs and notes for the programs, ask me if you need help, feel free to PM me also!

I'll be sending them via PM soon.

Best Regards,
Eu

Thank you all three for the help!!! I sure appreciate it. I tried the Jewelry/Beach mode and I found a dime, quarter and penny along with some trash. This was in one of the spots I had search already in coin mode.

That Jewelry Beach mode is NOISY. I still am not sure when to dig or pass it up. When I dug for the quarter and dime it pretty much told me it was a penny or a dime. But with the penny, it jumped from 32 to -14 to 71 to 32 again LOL. That is so confusing :( Sigh. I wish I had a seasoned detectorist to go out with me and give me a good ole lesson. I am not an old woman but I aint as young as I used to be hehehehe. I like to be taught aka spoonfed. ;D

EU I will try out the program you sent to me. I don't have a beach around here to try the 3rd one.

Thanks again all three of you and big hugs!

Well any area where big holes is no problem should be ok for the third program. Easy digging is just a bonus at the beach.

Look at the signagraph, it tells about the same as the VDI's but is more stable most of the time.
Also if the Signagraph also is jumpy try lowering the VDI sensitivity as to much of it will make the VDI readings jumpy.

On the box the DFX has the VDI numbers and a representing target for that VDI number.

Don't hesitate to send me a PM at any time, I will help as much as I can. Even if it comes to explain the separate features, anything goes. lol

Well if you think the factory preset Jewelry beach is noisy just wait for my programs!! Heheheh
But they will give you the extra depth you want, it just takes time to get used to.

Lori,

If you get VDI numbers that are constantly changing that means it's more than likely trash. You want to get a fairly consistant VDI. That's usually indicative of a good target if the VDI is in the good target range, that is. The reading can very slightly, a few numbers on either side but it should stay fairly consistant.

Actually digging a lot of trash or questionable targets can be an education itself. It'll help you learn what sounds & display readings are good or bad. Always bear in mind that the besat discriminator is your digging tool. Many good targets mimic junk & many junk targets mimic good targets. Like that piece of aluminum I found yesterday. A solid +81 VDI @ 3" turned out to be a piece of can at 8". My only consolation is that I at least got it out of the ground. To tell you the truth I was suspicious right off the bat. That's the experience factor.

A pleasure talking to you yesterday Lori. ;D
Maybe I'll catch you today also.

What Sarge is true when your VDI sensitivity is not to high, then more or less all VDI numbers can get jumpy.

I think the Signagraph is more worthy for me to trust.
I only use the VDI numbers to confirm the Signagraph readings.

While we're on the topic, what's going on when you get a good VDI number and maybe coin icon but no Singnagraph bar on the display. What does this mean?

I am not sure never had that happen to me.

But try different angles and see if it still gives a good VDI number maybe from approaching in a different angle it will give you a 'graph reading.

If it is a good VDI number I'd dig it, as many say the best discriminator is your shovel/digger.

You could also try to slow down, it is always good to go slow.

What it probably means is the target is deep. If you keep sweeping over the target you might start getting a bar or two. Graph Accumulate & Average might kick in.

I can't say for sure because I don't use icons, have them turned off, but use the VDI number & Signagraph only. I've had a VDI displayed without bars many times.
