I was wondering how the DFX would perform on dry sand and wet sand. This would be at the beach.

I've done my research, read a lot of reviews, and am aware of the Minelab machines that perform well for beach/water work.

One of each would be great but I'm not ready to fork over $2500. I know that beginners should simply buy a used Prizm II and see if they like the hobby, but I'm soliciting opinions on the DFX's performance at the beach (wet and dry). Not even sure the DFX is waterproof. If I was only planning to do parks and playgrounds, the answer would be obvious: White's

I have a DFX and a Minelab 1000. Both are great machines! You will have no problems with the DFX on wet or dry sand. You can take the DFX in the water....HOWEVER, make sure you do not get the box wet, or tip the coil end up (allowing water to run toward the box end). After having my DFX for about a year, I decided to check out the Minelab 1000 after a scarey day at the beach. I had taken my DFX out into the water and suddenly got broadsided by a wave, stepped into a hole in the sand.....and almost lost my DFX in the drink. After that I decided I needed to do some serious thinking about getting a water machine. Talked to Sandman and TonyinCT...and bought the 1000.

Like I said, it would be a hard choice for me to say which I liked better, because I like them both. If you look at the White's portion of TNET, you will find a lot of info on the DFX. Also, www.DFXonly.com....great info in the site. If you are seriously thinking about buying the DFX, check with TonyinCT. He is a very reputable dealer and will give you a great deal.........plus, he is a TNET member....and he has helped a ton of us with our purchases. Just a thought.

One of the main strengths of the dfx is the dual frequency...well how does this help in your decision? ??? The dual frequency allows for the ground cancellation in wet and dry sand... This is often a problem for most single frequency models...so yes the dfx is a mean machine in the sand...wet or dry...

Mel did a good job of telling you the truth. The DFX would be fine so long as you covered it with a plastic bag to keep the surf spray off it. You'd need to not run it wide open at the waters edge where the salt and black sand are together. Just have fun and don't fall down in the water.
