DFX - 1st Trip

If you are going in an area that is known to have a lot of undesirables I have had good luck on my DFX with the "Coins" mode and the "High Trash" if you scroll through your menu choices "coins" is the first and "high trash" is on down the menu. I would suggest using the "coins and jewelry" mode though once you get more familiar with the machine. It took me a while of listening to the sounds and correlating the VDI and Icons to get the hang of what was actually happening. The reason I suggest using the more sensitive "coins and jewelry" mode is that in a lot of cases there will be some good items in along with the trash and in the other two previous modes you will go right over them. Once you have learned this I think you will find that this is one of the best machines out there. I have gone back to places that have supposedly been hunted out and come back with a lot of silver. - Starbuck

Thanks for the information - By bumping up the preamp gain...does that effect anything else or take away from something else? [/quote]

Lejeuene, You should get the book "Digging Deeper with the DFX", if you can. It's a great help.

Many factors go into how the machine reacts when you bump up the pre-amp gain, you also need to bump up the AC sens.

I just got that book and read it in two days. I'll have to read it again, and again. There is a lot to take in.

Just picked up a new DFX myself last month.

It did help me that I started out way back on a non-motion VLF detector where you had to set up the knobs by hand, and listen differently for targets.

Get that book and read it. You will be amazed at how much better you'll understand the DFX.
HH, and better days are ahead on the new DFX, I promise.

Your depth is controled by the Pre amp Gain I run mine at 3 or 4. Also the depth on the discriminate side is controled by the Ac sensitivity Run mine in the 70's. Run them as high as you can with out getting false signals. They are set low in the factory set up to make sure the detector runs smooth for beginers.

There is a book: "Understanding White's DFX" By Jimmy "Sierra" Normandi that I've found very helpful. The best part is the price. Free. Follow this link... http://www.whiteselectronics.com/dfxbook.php

I'm still learning the DFX. And I will be learning it for a long time. When I want to keep it simple, I use the coin program with the preamp gain wide open. (4) If I don't mind a few extra beeps, I run the deep silver program with the preamp gain on 3 or 4 with the A.C. sensitivity reduced to where the DFX is stable. I've played with some other adjustments, but I've found that those small changes really tweak the factory settings for my coin shooting.

Tone ID is next... ;D

The next time out forget about the facturytury settings. They willnot get you any depth. There was a small book included with my DFX by some British guy. Now he knows his stuff. My whites Specturim is very simeler to my DFxand the factury settings are a joke. Try useing the deep silver mode. Try to up the pre amp gain to 3 or 4 and up if you can the Ac sen and the dc sen . Cut the bottle cap rejection to 1. Set sweep speed at 3 and use 4 filters. If it is noisy cut the ac and dc sens back a couple of numbers.I turn off my modulation. This should get you some nice depth. I found out the hard way that the Ist 3 or 4 preset programs will not get any depth at all. Try it out on your bacement floor with a few coins and you will see what I mean about depth when you modifuy the settings. Good luck. I Never could figure out why Whites messes with your head with the 1st few facturty setting. If I couldnot have figured this out I wouldnot be useing a whites. A 4or 5 bottle can reject cuts the depth out entirely. You catch on real quick.
