Detecting in Saint Petersburg

Looking for someone to detect with from time to time...

Just bumping my original post up, as I've been really wanting to get back out and do a little land detecting. I need to look into getting permission for that Al Capone house, if I can ever locate the owner. :metaldetector:

If you know where the house is located then go to the Pinellas County Tax Office and have the agent look up the current owner. Also go to Treasure Dive Sites and you might find something there. Do you know how Treasure Beach got its name? A poor couple back during the Depression of the 30's lived in a shack and used long probes to probe the beach. They probed for 5 years until one day they showed up downtown St. Pete in a brand new 1935 Ford, dressed to the Nines and flushed with cash. They drove North never to be seen again. Towns people went out to the beach where their shack was and saw a big hole dug in the beach. You could see the tell tale signs of where a chest had been pulled out. What was in that chest, hmmmm?

Already went that route. The owner not only skipped town after he purchased it... he skipped the country altogether! Without his permission, I'm DOA.

Interesting story. Because of the history of our area, I wouldn't doubt it could be legit. But then again, what was that story about Jose Gasparilla? ;-)

Hey Bran,
Welcome back! Caught your post from last week but wasn't able to reply til now. I wouldn't mind getting together -maybe we can plan a day. If you want to make some arrangements PM me or I'll PM you. Were you interested in land hunting? Anything in mind? Parks, etc? I'm in Brandon probably a solid hours drive from you but if you have places you want a partner for let me know!

I don't have any solid places here, just a couple small park areas. I do have a place down in Venice on the beach that I'd like to check out sometime when I have the chance. Are there any places over in your neck of the woods that you'd like to pay a visit to?

btw, I prefer land hunting over beach hunting... I really like to try for the historical finds over the modern stuff.

Ha, my answer is almost the same as yours lol. The only places I visit regularly are a few small ones close to where I live and they haven't produced anything significant. I would venture further out but would like to go with a partner for safety. I was looking at a map of St. Pete and it seems to have a lot of small parks that have been around for a long time. I found what looked like an abandoned park at the corner of 66 St. N and 9th Ave. N. but it might be attached to the church next to it. But it's definitely looking like it has been abandoned in favor of a newer park closer to the church. Check it out.
I like to do either land or beach.

I agree! I don't like detecting alone either, which is why I haven't been out since the Florida Hunt earlier this year in North Florida.

That park you're talking about, I believe, is where the old Catholic church used to be. They tore it down while I was at college. I've seen a couple guys detecting there a few years ago. It might be a good site to hit hard.

Well maybe we can get together on a weekend sometime if your not busy.

Im probably good for a weekend the earlier we can start in the AM the better. I also have an occasional day during the week. I'll check my schedule and get back to you tomorrow.

My week is pretty packed with work every day and church on Wednesday night's. But I agree, the earlier the better before the heat of the day and the insects come out. Can't wait until the weather starts cooling down again...

Hey Bran, It looks like a Saturday might work for both of us. If you're up for setting up a meeting I'd have no problem meeting you on the St. Pete side. I can do this Saturday or next or whatever works for you. Think it over and if you want give me a heads up. -Dave

This Saturday would have been perfect, but the new youth pastor at church just asked me last night to prepare & teach the lesson this Sunday for the whole youth group... so it looks like I'm going to be busy working on that this Sat, unless God puts something on my heart & mind today while we're driving up to the Ichetucknee Springs to take the youth group on a float trip. I'll be one of the groomsmen in my adopted brother's wedding next Sat also :-\ The following Saturday the 24th will finally be open for me. I'll be heading up to Alabama the weekend after that for my Mawmaw's wedding... I think I'm going to be all weddinged out by the end of this month, but I'd really like to get out and do some detecting with you! It's been too many months since I've had the chance to get out...

Oh my goodness you are one busy man but it sounds like fun. I understand about wanting to get out -I've been itching to get out and do some detecting and it's only been 2 weeks. My schedule is such that I work long days so I normally work 4 days a week to offset the OT so I have a bit of wiggle room. Eventually we'll find a date that works for both of us. So how bout this... if you do you get an opening on one of these Saturdays just let me know and we'll try for it even if it's tomorrow or couple weeks from now. It's summer time and I understand we're all still busy with family trips and with the kids being out of school.

Dave

Yeah, somewhat. I just finished going over my Sunday School lesson that I'll be teaching the teens in the youth group in the AM. I think I might be able to get out with you next Saturday, after the wedding & reception. It's at 9am, so I would assume we'll be out before noon. Either case, my father-in-law is heading over to Tampa to a family member's house. The person's great great grandfather was the man who started the cigar factory over in Ybor all those years ago. Anyway, I'm assuming that the house is possibly old... so we may be able to give it a shot and do a little detecting on the property. I told my F-I-L to check and see if we'd be able to detect it when we head over there next Sat after the wedding. I think I'm going to shoot him another text message right now to remind him to ask. So hopefully we might be able to get out sooner than later! :-)

Wow, that would be awesome! A rich history with a lot of original homes still standing. Are you familiar with the area? I know of a small block in what looks like a relatively safe area that used to full of homes but is now empty, if the opportunity arises. I'll be free Saturday and look forward to going. Good luck with getting permission!

No, I'm not familiar with the area at all. It might just be a shot in the dark, but we'll see if he's able to get permission to hunt the place. We can always hit up a different location though if it doesn't pan out.

I was just doing some research in the area around Ybor. If Plan A doesn't work out, I found 2 parks ( that look hunter-friendly ) not too far away in what looks like a quiet neighborhood that appear to date back to 1957 if not earlier. If you want I can give you the names/location of the parks.

Sounds good. Hopefully things work out though. Those parks sound like a good alternate location, if this house/property doesn't pan out...

Hey Dave... just wanted to let you know that I'm unsure if I'll be able to go detecting after the wedding. My adopted brother is having a reception, then wanted to hang out with the family before they leave on their honeymoon.

I'm still thinking next Saturday might work though, since I have nothing scheduled. I've been on the forums a bit more lately, and I'm starting to get the detecting bug back pretty hard! lol

Let me know what you think...
