Can anyone tell me if this is a good or decent detector? I have a Bounty Hunter/Treasure Hunter XJ9.

I am VERY NEW to this and have been twice now and I got 2 quarters, some kind of metal piece I am still trying to determine what it is, loads of beer cans, and 3 bottle caps, one of those were made in Jamaica ;D

Thanks for any help you can give me and please be honest. I NEED to know what I got here. ;D

I did not realized that. I have seen in some of TH's adds that thet detect up to 5 feet for larger items, must be a sales gimmick. It didn't hook me, I decided to look for better features.

Thats about the Maximum I'v ever heard anyone Claim on a Dime (18") & believed them (Explorer & PI users) :) I'v found Dimes at 12" mabe 14" . LARGE OBJECTS 5 FEET . YES posable considering Beer Cans at 3 feet with a Good Signal for me. I'v givin up on all signals deeper.

Man you guys are great! I really appreciate the info.

I am playing with the tones now and trying to figure out what the junk tone is and the gold tones are ;D

I am going to KellyCo Saturday and buying some headphones. How are the Accu headphones? Or is there something better? I figure since I don't have a top of the line detector then I need to at least hedge my bets with a good set of headphones right?

I am in Deltona Florida and plan on hitting a lot of different areas so hopefully my unit will be up to handling things.

I do KNOW that when I turn the discrim down that I still pick up and find Alum cans down to 8" in black dirt. So I am assuming that since I have turned it down, these cans must have the same build up of other items right? Am I asking the proper question? I guess I need to learn the terminology. IF we were discussing shrimping and fishing I could talk that ;D

Does anyone know if I take my unit into Kelly Co that they might help me understand somethings? Even though I did not buy it from them.

Thanks again for all the help everyone has given me.

I use ACCUSOUND headphones & Love them. Every year & a half I do have to send them in for repair, which cousts $6.00 Postage & Handling, But it's like getting a new pair every year & a half. & there Service is Fast & reliable. Just so you understand, I am hard on headphones. I don't think this is Normal. I just Have problems Keeping the Wires, from getting Yanked. So the Lifetime warranty is Important to me. on your Question about cans having Build up of other items ? SORRY I don't speak " Shrimping or Fishing Language" :lol . Just can't figure out what your asking :lol as for picking up aluminum cans. There is no Remidy. There there & You'll find them. on taking it into Kellyco, all you can do is try. I'm shure they won't throw you out. Plus it will make it easier to get the Correct Type of Headphones.

Sorry for the confusion. I think what i am asking is this:

If I turn my discrim DOWN that is supposed to make finding valuable stuff easier or at least pinpoint those types of items. Yet when the discrim is down I am still getting signals on Alum cans. Is this NORMAL? OR should I only be picking them up when the discrim is all the way up?

I hope I have cleared this question up. ;D

Actually You'r talking Backwards. IF you turn Disc "UP" you Discrim out Trash, If you turn Down You Find More Trash. HOWEVER Aluminum cans are Big & not easy Discriminating out. also IF you Disc out Can Tabs , You Disc out Gold & Nickels. Too much Discrimination can be Bad, in my opinion. the more trash you dig, the better the finds become

Agreed,

if you turn your disc. up too far, you'll block out the better metals (mainly gold, but the higher you turn it up, the more metals you block).

Blocking out a beer/soda can is almost impossible because it's so large (and they fool the detector)..

KEWL!! Thanks guys. I am not surprised I have it backwards!!!! That round thingy on the end of the dectector gets pointed to the ground right? ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think you're expecting too much from your detector. There ain't one out there that will detect coins down to 5' and who would dig that far anyway? Also there's no detector that will accurately identify every item you come across 100% ot the time or even close to that. A puill tab signal just might be a small gold earring and a 50 cent icon may just be a flattened bottle cap. You have to dig....dig a lot!

Kellycos showroom is great and the people are helpful. They seem like they want to help treasure hunters be better treasure hunters. Dont be afraid to take equipment in even if its not theirs to match up with something else. They will give you a demo on anything they sell. You can pick them up play with them, get a good feel for what you want.

Okay Bull, take five, go throw a variety of items on the ground and see how your disc works. Nails, pulltabs, screwcaps, coins gold and silver jewelry, pop cans, a steering column from an old Buick and one of those DOD surplus jet engines. Because you never know what you'll find, but you wanna be in the ballpark (metaphorically) when you start digging a target. Practice makes better, perfect is a ways off in this hobby.

What does "good or decent" mean? To me, it means that it provides me with fun. If you're having fun with it, then it's good and decent.

I don't know about this particular detector but you do seem to be finding things. Some beginners start treasure hunting/coin hunting in the most difficult locations and that frustrates them. I suggest finding a friend, neighbors, or relatives fairly clean yard and beginning there until you become more familar with your detector. The suggestions about throwing several different items on the ground, properly separated of course, and scanning them to learn the different sounds your detector makes is a good one. It is also beneficial to have a test garden where you have buried a selection of coins and other commonly found items and hearing what they sound like in the ground. Most important of all is to practice, which means get out often, with your detector until you know what it is saying to you when you scan a target. Good luck! Jim Cal
