It's an applied decoration that was cast in a mold. Cheaper than hand carved wood, and before machine carved wood decorations like you can buy in the hardware store. May have been scavenged for lead for casting.

Maybe its a plaster mold for room decorations that were painted with gold gilt to embelish archways and ceiling boarders. Just a guess.

I should buy some puddy to see what the design reverse design looks like. I could also use plaster. :wink:
