Dealing with the waves while detecting in the surf

I think I'm done with trying to find things in the sand at my beach. It's a popular one and probably over-detected. At least, I've found nothing but junk in the sand so far. In the water, however, is a different story. It's not canvassed nearly as much, and honestly, I think I'll find more there anyway. The thing is, out of necessity I have to go in past where the waves crash in, but not so far out that I'm in up to my nose. But what a royal pain it is to have to deal with those swells that threaten to knock you off your feet. That's my main problem. Do those of you who go in the water ever check the wind speed or wave height before going out to decide if you'll go out, or just tough it out when you get there if it's rough?

Absolutely! Low tide is a must. I used to wear a weight belt when I was younger, with a mask and snorkel in case of a rouge wave or swell. the trick in hip deep water is keeping your hip to the wave face.

I always check the surf report, waste of time if it is much over 3 ft surf for me, Im talking breaking waves, not swells..

I don't detect the beach anymore, but optimum times is after a holiday for coins and jewelry. But older stuff is after a hurricane comes through.

What part of Central Florida are you? If it's the Melbourne area. I would recommend Ponce de Leone beach and south until you get to Sebastian. Then at the Mcarty museum south if you're looking for older stuff. Newer stuff head north of there

Thanks, one time or another I have hunted most beaches from Key West to Jacksonville, and West Coast from Ft Meyers to Sunset Beach.

I see. So, if the waves are under 3-ft., you're golden. Otherwise, you don't go. I'll start keeping an eye on the wave heights during the day and see what they're like at my beach from now on.

I'm in Clearwater, so no wreck hunting for me, unless I want to drive across the state.

I found modern gold jewelry, no Spanish gold. Gold is over $3000 oz now so every gold find is a "treasure".

I feel if I was to try detecting like that , to me it would be very challenging , equivalent to me doing overgrown woods and getting torn up
