OK.... I have had my VX3 for one week now and have been finding some really neat stuff.

However... I really like DD coils and am thinking about 2 OEM coils from Whites.... the 6x10 and the 10" D2.

I typically search open areas and have alot of ground to cover. In honesty most of my finds are under 10" deep... but sometimes hit coins at 8-10. I do hit relics over 12" at times.

Considering that, I want a coil that has good target separation... but not at the cost of depth. So... what would you recommend?

I would get the 10" D2 coil its a really deep coil and separates pretty good, you should be able to get dimes at 10"+ with that coil.

Is your ground trashy at all or contaminated with iron? If it's really bad then the 6X10 is better. If it's moderate then the D2 will be quite a bit better on depth. Also consider the machine is noticeably heavier with the D2 coil, the 6X10 is light. That alone gets me using the 6X10 for longer hunts. (I have both coils).

Both coils scan roughly 10" of ground (vertically) at a pass, but the D2 probably gets you another 2" or 3" EASY on depth and it does surprisingly well in heavier iron areas I have found - but you have to do more work to get the separation the 6X10 does easily. The 6X10 will get you 10" depth (I think) on quarters and maybe 8"-9" on dimes if your ground isn't too contaminated with iron or minerals. (Someone correct me on depth if I'm wrong). I'd try to use that D2 coil if you could.

Hope that helps,
EMS

Thank you for the input!

My ground conditions are typically sugar sand that gives way to low grade iron ore. Trashy areas are a typical spot I hunt...thus the need for better target separation. The stock 950 coil is not giving me much of that at all. Masking on this seems to be an issue. .... at least for me.

Im really leaning toward the D2 now... I like depth on the deeper stuff... I dont mind weight.

I'd buy an SEF coil... but I hear its a love or hate situation with those....

i've got the 6x10, the 950 and now have the whites 8x14, just a larger 6x10 and not that heavy, goes a little deeper too.

I found a deal on a D2... should be her in a few days... cant wait to try it out.

I notice that my VX3 has some serious issues with Iron ore and high RX gain settings. Im hoping this will clear some of that up.

Yeah, often a high iron level and high Rx settings are a bad mix. But don't worry, you can drop your Rx down to where you need (say 6) and still get GREAT depth. Most of your depth comes from the Disc Sens. You can verify this easily enough.

The D2 in iron is NO COMPARISON to the 950. Really, it is leaps better in heavy iron. Even in medium iron it separates easier. I won't say better but you can work the soil so much faster and more thoroughly that it is better. In higher mineralization (even if it's just iron mineralization and low overall mineralization) it is better - I have found.

Good luck, nice machine,
Albert

After a few weeks of use.... I can say I really like the D2.... I liked it from my first hunt.

It does have great separation, and depth.
