Hi all- like many of you in the Northern climates I've been having a bit of detecting withdrawl due to the weather...
Well today I arrived home just as the snow started.... which we all know is supposed to be a big'un...
Thinking I may not have the chance to detect for the next week my son and I headed out thinking that we could get an hour or so in before the snow got too deep. We went to a site in the woods we have hit some last fall... its an old homestead that has produced fairly well with some coppers and an old 1/2 reale plus some nice relics.
Well after the 20 minute ATV ride and the additional 5 minute walk, we were pretty cold. But undeterred we started to swing away in the then 2 inches of snow.
First thing my son found was that he should have changed the batteries in the Garrett... But he was happy to follow me around and dig some finds.
Since the snow was coming down pretty hard, we didn't stay long.... long enough to find three buttons. One is real interesting - while its only about 1/2"in diameter, it has the head of Lady Liberty in the fashion of a classic head Largie or Half cent and 13 stars surround her. When we pulled it out, I thought it was simply another smooth button.... My son discovered the head and I knew we had a keeper.
The other buttons for the day were smooth... one large, one small. The neat thing about the small one is that it still has some remnants of thread in the shank! Never did I ever expect to see that!
Well my pictures are not great, but here they are.... the fourth button without the shank was also found at this same site about a week ago. The last picture shows the thread remains in the button.
