Dangerous Snake Encounters

Being in Arizona Rattlers are every where so you have to be very aware of your surroundings, they are one of the reasons I choose to not wear over the ear headphones when I am out metal detecting, rattlers, Jajalina, bear, Mountain lions and the two Legged critters are the main critters we have to watch out for

i always wear Snake Guards when I do get to go out nugget detecting and good boots those two things will keep a good day of detecting, a good day of detecting without those two things it can turn a good day detecting into a really bad day of detecting

I was going to do some prospecting on a river up by Coarsegold Ca. while making my way along the high water mark I almost stepped on a coiled up rattler (probably around a 6 footer). Luckily it's head was under the rocks it was coiled up by, otherwise it would have DETECTED me. But of course in one of my dumber moments I decided to poke it with my walking stick. LOL then I ran like the devil was on my shirt tails. My worst mistake was telling my wife what I did, I think she started regretting marrying me. LOL

If you have had any dangerous snake encounters while detecting please tell us about them :)

My Self I was down in the Vicksburg Mississippi area. We was in a area that had some sugar canes. I was swinging a detector and all of a sudden I felt something moving under my foot. I looked down and there was a small rattlesnake trying to squirm either away or at me but a sugarcane prevented it from getting at me. I jumped back and it squirmed away. It happened so fast I did not have time to be scared till AFTER !!!! I told Robert my hunting buddy from there and he told me I should ONLY wear a head phone on ONE EAR. I SAID ONE EAR WHY DID YOU TELL ME THIS BEFORE and he said he figured I already knew about it

They looked like they was waiting for someone to come by and test there venom
Those 2 snakes aren't waiting to bite anyone, they are in battle with each other over females and a certain area with females, like Rams head butting each other until one leaves and the other reaps the rewards/females!!

Here's a couple of videos of it happening.

I have had lots of encounters but the worst was detecting one day where we lived last. I was happily swinging away and mid step, one foot still in the air a huge eastern brown about 6 foot long started to slither across the foot still on the ground. I froze with the other still in the air until it was gone. Didn't know I could stand so still on one foot for so long until then. Highly venomous.
I once had one lash out and bite my coil too.

If I'm not mistaken, Arizona has more different kinds of rattlesnakes than any state.

Numerous times.

One that I fondly recall was when I was detecting for gold up a steep narrow draw near the crest of a ridge. Right in front of me at waist height about 4 feet away was a rattler coiled up rattling at my belly. Without hesitating, I smoothly drew my revolver (.357 Mag) and instantly shot it in the head. It happened so quickly. I amazed myself.

Taking advantage of the situation, I took my detector coil and tossed it casually aside and kept detecting up the draw without hardly missing a beat. Knowing that I was a bad ass. ;)

When I finished detecting, I got back to my truck and laying in the road by the door was a huge rattler. I shot that one in the head with one shot as well (thinking to myself what are the chances?). Buried its head and went home.

That was one for the books.

Did you use single shot lad or like a bird shot in your gun ?

GREAT PICTURES TERRY !!! Did you have an encounter with them ?
